-Boston really doesn't have the assets to get him, in my eyes. If they give up their 1st this year and Fabian Lysell, that means they don't pick til somewhere in the late 80s/early 90s in this year's draft, plus they've just sent away their #1 prospect. They might be able to figure out a way to keep both Horvat & Pasta this summer, but do they really need to add Horvat to that lineup? And that's before you get to the idea that Lysell & this year's 1st is an offer that is pretty easily beaten by other suitors for Horvat.
-Colorado makes even less sense than Boston. They actually have a worse prospect pipeline, and they've already sent away their 2nd & 3rd round picks in the next two drafts. If they give up their 1st this year, they don't make a pick until the 5th round; they also only really have Oskar Olausson and Sean Behrens as prospects that you could call anything more than "depth guys" - and not only do they have limited assets to pursue the trade, they also only have about $12M in cap space this summer with a bunch of guys to replace (Compher/Rodrigues/Helm/Cogliano/Johnson) or re-sign (Byram/Newhook). The fit just isn't there.
-The Hurricanes make more sense than the other two, but the last time Don Waddell traded a 1st for a deadline rental, he was acquiring Keith Tkachuk. Not saying it won't happen, but if it does it'll be a more creative deal (and will involve Carolina sending cap back to make this year's cap work.) I can see this more than the other because the Canes DO have the cap to take on an extended Horvat - they're clearing $13M between Pacioretty & Staal's deals expiring this summer, they can surely give Horvat $8M and use the $5M on another top-6 winger and not miss a step.
-The Wild have done an amazing job of clearing cap this year, and the fact that they can take on Horvat's full cap hit at the deadline will lower the acquisition cost for them. But the cap hell they're going to be in with the buyouts over the next couple seasons makes them extremely unlikely to extend Horvat at $8M+ - so they're not going to value him any higher than a guy that they're gonna get 20-35 games out of.
-The Caps probably make the most sense out of this bunch - they have the cap space this year (assuming they keep Connor Brown & John Carlson LTIRed til the playoffs), and they've got the cap space and roster spots next season. I think they might offer a 1st/2nd/Vincent Iorio package to take Horvat in - maybe a little more, but they're another team that's very old and shouldn't be mortgaging their entire future for a guy. They're gonna need young bodies on ELCs if they're adding Horvat at $8Mish to Ovi/Backstrom/Wilson/Carlson.
