As a Devils fan, I agree in principle with the Severson trade

We don’t really want Sandin though. I’d rather take on Justin Holl’s contract for the rest of the season. Here’s how I’d conduct the trade

TOR
- Damon Severson (comes with an extension) (50% retained)

NJD
- 2nd Round Pick (2024)**
- Nick Robertson
- Justin Holl

This pick upgrades to a 1st Round pick in 2024 if the Maple Leafs advance past the First Round

What type of contract do you feel Severson will get? 5 mill by 5 years, 4.25 mill by 4 years or something else? Right-hand D are hard to find - that will help him get like .50-1M more than he's worth.

Dubas is loyal to Holl he might not... but he should. Leafs couldn't afford an extension higher than 5x5. It could be like 75 per cent in signing bonus money though.

I'm expecting Severson, Dumba or Gavirkov to end up in Toronto without a 1st round pick being involved.

If the Devils are a bubble team or worse, I do that. That said, that offer may get beaten by a team offering a 1st.

As long as Devils are in the playoff picture, Severson would be unlikely to be moved. If we fall out…maybe it works. I think we would definitely be looking to add young players over picks. Knies would probably be first ask.

What an overpay for Severson. He's not special and to trade a cost efficient top 6 young LD....just foolish.
