I think that Matthews gets the exact same deal as MacKinnon, maybe a little less, even as the cap goes up. $10 million for Nylander is a crazy overpay. I think it makes more sense to get another guy who's cheaper like a Bunting and save $5.5 million to sign another defenseman and a a couple physical depth guys.

Nylander on the open UFA market will get $9 to $10 million and Matthews will want to be the highest paid Nhl player and he knows McDavid will be getting a new contract after him, so Auston will probably want $14 million and McDavid will get $15+ million when his time comes.

Honestly, I hope Nylander walks as an UFA. Sure he is a point per game player but, I agree a $4-$5 million guy will work out in the Top 6 and will give the Leafs a chance for another $7+ million Top pair Dman.

There's a team that would give Nylander 9M I guarantee and Matthews gets 15% of the cap that's the rule of thumb max at 90M that's 13.5 for sure he'll get it.

Slim chance that a 7m+ top pairing dman is available in the next couple of years anyways. They are better off with Nylander considering Tavares will likely start dropping off sooner rather than later. Also, Nylander is capable of being a 90+ pt player, he was basically PPG last year despite the struggles they had and is on pace for 90+ this year.

Nylander will deserve a raise. He could give a discount and stay for 8.5 to 9 million, otherwise he leaves for more.

Bunting is going to max out his deal. He is a late rookie, he can walk somewhere and get paid. If I were him, I'd be seeking a 4-5 year deal at 5.5 million. Unless of course he wants to bet on himself and take a discount deal that takes him to another prove it year, and then get his final big deal for 7-8 years at whatever his cap hit should be, 6 million maybe?

I think J.T.'s next contract will look like a D. Perron $5 range or a N. Kadri $7 range. So that leaves money on the table for Marner's $2 raise and an Dman upgrade.

Yeah, we will see what happens but I just meant they don't need to move Nylander to save 5m for a Dman that likely wouldn't even be available during that time frame.

Pesce and Hanifin are 2 potential UFA Dman available for the summer of 2024.

Should be 2024 off-season for both.

Hanifin plays the left side so he's not needed and Pesce might become available but I don't see Carolina trading him in the 2023-24 season and it would be in the Leafs best interest to make a decision on Nylander in the 2023 off-season but worst case 2024 so the timelines don't match up.
