That’s an easy no from COL. Gourde isn’t a significant upgrade over Compher and Rodrigues. Also COL isn’t messing with their d-corp in the season.

Gourde is a huge upgrade over 2C and soucy has been better than girard so far

Gourde has 4 goals. He isn't currently an upgrage over Newhook, ERod or Compher and isn't worth losing Girard for. Soucy is a ufa and Gourde costs the same as Girard(who would need to be replaced with no money).
This would hurt the Avs now and next season.

No it doesn’t and no he isn’t. He has 19 pts 2 more than Compher and a cap hit $1.6M more. He’s a nice player but at his cap hit it isn’t worth doing or making the defense significantly less dynamic particularly in transition. COL just needs to get healthy, though one positive of the injuries might be just be playing Rantanen at C.

the net positives dont help the avs here. they dont gain cap space, they take on more this year (they dont even have the cap space for this trade this year) and more next year, and downgrade their draft pick in the process.

they are an even worse cap spot. next year and worse draft capital to show for it.

Gourde is better than Compher but hes not worth doing this trade, you also are cherry picking the comments here. If you do this vs Evan Rodrigues its not as flattering

I agree. I may be in the minority but I just dont understand many Avs fans valuations of Girard. They act like hes on such a fantastic contract but honestly I dont think hes even been playing like a $5M player for the past couple seasons. Sure hes young still and D's are valuable but the performance just isnt there right now (perhaps he could find success again in a bigger role elsewhere). It makes a lot more sense to trade away from a position of strength (LD) to a position of weakness (C), especially when they are also getting a replacement LD in Soucy for a year

I'm with you on the Avs being deep enough on D without Girard but I don't think this answers the 2C question for the Avs. In fact it's all round bad for the Avs. Using Girard to fill that hole yes. Knee jerk bad trade no.

It doesn't answer it in a particularly positive way. He's decent but is he that much more decent than what we have and enough to give up those pieces? My answer would be no. Give Rodrigues a raise and keep him to play 2C along with Newhook (interchangeable lefty/righty combo) if Gourde's the best you can come up with as an alternative. Keep the '23 1st. Trade Girard for futures. Play MacDonald as 3LD (I seem to be one of the few who thinks he should actually get a shot and given time will be capable enough alongside EJ). I see this as a knee jerk bad trade, but of course I probably place a higher value on Girard than you.

I think Gourde is a pretty significant upgrade on any 2C option we currently have. I'm ok with that scenario too but ERod/Newhook are way less proven for that 2C role than Gourde is and they could end up in the same spot of needing a real 2C again. It's just about risk tolerance I guess but I'd prefer to have a guy like Gourde behind MacKinnon instead of a question mark even if we have to trade futures for it

We all just value players differently. You value Girard more than me and I value Gourde more than you so we're a bit far off here. At the end of the day we're all just armchair GMs and real NHL trade values can be way off from public opinion too so I think we're both kinda just guessing anyway
