Description
This is based on if the Wings are sellers. Please, don't tell me he's worth a 2nd. He's not. Enough with everyone thinking their 4th liners are worth 2nd round picks.

Ignore the cap, because the proration at the deadline for this trade with the retention should bring them under.

Sundqvist isn't worth a 2nd. He's worth being re-signed. He's a great bottom 6 guy.

I’ll take sundqvist back…

Can’t wait to hear pit radio after that’s the only move they make at the deadline lol 😂
Bunch of know it all’s complaining that we didn’t trade the 1st for Kane lol 😂

I think Yzerman will resign Sunny, He really likes him a lot. Yzerman generally doesn't trade for players and then just deals them.

That's a different story, but if he does become available I think this is a fair trade and I personally believe this is the exact type of move the pens need to make.

Aside from the last two terribly games played by the Pens, this is a very good hockey team and missing one of their best dmen. This team really doesn't need major moves to get them where they need to go. Some minor tweaks and this team because a major force lines one through four.

Obviously moving Kapanen and getting another winger would be nice, but I don't think that happens this season.

Every year teams overpay for bottom 6 guys. I'll never forget when Nashville gave up a 1st for Gaustad.

Thing is, Sunny fits nicely up and down the lineup. Even a 2nd round pick may not be worth it in this instance because you need to find a replacement that fits, and you could end up with another Adam Erne, which is bad. A 2nd round pick doesn't usually help a team for at least a few years, all the while the Wings are trying to be a cup contender in 3 years or so. The pick could always be flipped for something more, but that still isn't a guarantee.

For every situation like Guastad, there's a better who went for less. It really depends on what the market bares in a given year.

True. This year will be interesting though because the standings are much closer so there are fewer sellers. The only high profile rentals expected to move are Kane, Toews, Meier, Klingberg, and Horvat. There are several others like ROR, Tarasenko, Pacioretty, Larkin, etc but if any of those guts get moved it will be a "hockey trade" where one team isn't getting the best player while the other gets futures. There are a few out there like Bertuzzi, where we might as well coin flip.

My gut feeling is telling me, first that I shouldn't have eaten the whole Gargantuan from Jimmy John's. Then my gut feeling is telling me this year is a sellers market.

Not trying to be a dick here, but you said "only" and you named five high profile rentals. That's a lot lol. This is pretty rich market, but there are still plenty of x-factors that can affect whether it becomes a buyer's market. Some of these players control their destiny which will leave little leverage to some teams, but yeah you add on players like ROR, Tarasenko, etc... if STL is a seller which I believe they will be.

You have other possible rentals like Monahan, Nyquist, JVR, Sundqvist, AA, Bonino, Ghost, Maatta, Shatty...., so you probably have more supply than demand. Looking like a buyer's market.

I just can't see St Louis throwing in the towel, but I hadn't realized how far out they are right now. I guess it will all depend on what happens in January. Lots of players could be on the move from there.

Of the five high profile rentals, Meier is gonna be different as a sign and trade type. Probably same likely with Horvat. Kane and Toews control their destiny, but I'm not convinced teams will overpay for Toews at least. Klingberg is a second tier defenseman who probably fetches the biggest haul this deadline.

All the guys in that second tier are not all that desirable outside of Sunny, Nyquist and Ghost. Maata is not going anywhere.

Not sure this really helps the team that much though. You're basically bringing in Sundqvist to play over Archibald who is playing great - and having a better season

Sullivan has had no issues benching Kapanen. That said, I've been a big fan of Archibald this season, Sundqvist is still a better hockey player and maintains having a very good 4th line while simultaneously upgrading the 3rd.

Does it really upgrade the 3rd line though? Or the 4th? It's just a 3rd round pick you're giving up and I don't think it makes the team any worse - so I'm not saying I'm against the move. I'm just not sure if I see any noticeable improvement with this bottom 6 that would push them into anymore of a cup contender than they already are. But who knows, I'm an idiot lol

Blueger remains in a 4C role because Sullivan is very attached to that line, but he is truly a 3C. His two-game is VERY good and he really does elevate players around him, so bumping Carter to the wing is in itself a way to get more out of him.

I really would hate to break up that 4th line though haha. Sometimes you just need to keep people together when it's working. We saw what happened when he switched up the top lines lol. Blueger is more of a protypical 3C than Carter for sure - but 3C and 4C tend to have similar playstyles so he fits their as well. Carter may very well benefit from a move to wing - I guess I just hoped if he did it would be for a bigger improvement to 3C and the bottom 6 as a whole.

The Pens have one of the best 4th lines in hockey and that's been the story for a few years, and it's because of Blueger, so yeah, I'd hate to break it up. That said, it's easier and cheaper to bring in a good 4C, so if they can identify one I think it's the smartest way for the Pens to go without giving up too many futures or having to move out too much salary.

Yeah it's definitely giving up little so I'm not going to stress over the trade that much - I just hope it's enough to actually be a noticeable improvement.

The ducks say no thank you. We've already seen a Heinen stint in ANA and we for sure are not going to want to send a 5th rounder away. Unless this was a 3 way trade you were making and the ducks send Heinen somewhere else for like a 4th bc I guess we are retaining half his contract.

I think you missed the note under the Heinen trade. Anaheim is just the first team on the list.

Something needs to give. Carter has to be put in a different position.
