Toews for a 1st is kinda eh. Also, i'd rather send Coghlan down and carry 3 goalies instead of dumping Raanta.

Is he ready in a few weeks? I was under the impression that he was still months away

Oddly enough, I think the Kings are more interested in bringing back Maata than acquiring Raanta (judging by Copley's play so far)

Skating with the team and currently scheduled to be back sometime in Jan. Need $7m in space…makes acquiring anyone over around $1.6m after retention rather difficult.

Ah I didnt know that. I guess you could pay a late pick for double retention on Toews then undo the Maatta trade and run a 22 or 21 man roster which should make at least 7M available

It’s your post, so not trying to dissect it too much here, but that is a lot of moving parts to add Toews. Think the Canes would be more likely to do all of that to pursue Horvat who has a longer future…

The need is likely more on depth defense, as Coghlan isn’t the type of player we want filling in on the 3rd pairing of an injury happens.

Well, not only will Patches cap hit be pro-rated to reflect the time he has missed, but Toews cap hit will also be 50% retained and pro-rated to the date of the trade. I ran Kane through the trade machine the other day, who obviously has the same cap hit and salary structure, and with 50% retention pro-rated for the exact date of the trade deadline, his actual cap hit at that point would be just under $1.2M. Which means Toews would be the same. Which means both of them are way more affordable than most people originally thought. I almost never use the trade machine on capfriendly, so I didn't even realize you could calculate that until the other day. Cap hits and salaries aren't reflected properly here on ACGM for whatever reason.

Canes are in LTIR, nothing is prorated for them. They are not accruing cap space. It’s money in-money out. They have to have $7m cap space to activate Patches when he’s back.

Teams are always accruing cap space. That is just how it works. Patches cap hit will only reflect the remaining days of the season after he is removed from LTIR and placed on the active roster.

It’s not but don’t think this is the forum to hash out the LTIR specifics. Canes will be on LTIR even when Patches comes back because of Gardiner. Believe me or not, it’s cool. But the Canes, and a TON of other teams in the league are actually not accumulating daily cap because they started the season in LTIR.

Oh right. It's so overly complicated that I have to brush up on this crap every time. I haven't even had to consider LTIR implications since the summer or the TDL last year, I can't even remember when. Plus, I completely forgot about Gardiner. Even so, with double retention, sending some cap back, and his cap hit prorated to the date of the trade, CAR might be able to make it work, if they are actually interested. Not sure I see why CAR would need him though.

You and I have always been cordial on here and we agree on many things. I know you won't take this the wrong way. CAR isn't accruing any cap space right now. They're technically over the cap ceiling right now, but the LTIR provisions allow teams to continue to operate because they rightfully are allowed to replace injured players.

What you see on the team page for deadline cap space...click on the "?" to the left and the fine print shows up that when a team's using LTIR AND they're over the cap ceiling THEN that LTIR available value is what shows up. If Patches/Jake stay on LTIR then yes, they'll have plenty of "cap space". Since in this case Patches is coming back...they're about to lose $7M of that $7.7M cushion. If CAR just wanted to bring Patches back and Gardiner was LTIR for the rest of the season...they'd still not technically accrue any cap space because Gardiner would still push CAR over the limit, BUT LTIR allows that Gardiner cap hit to be filled up with cap hit from lesser...capped...players.

If CAR wanted to make a trade for Either Toews/Kane they'd have to get them double retained and then either do a waivers dance sending some guys like Stepan and/or Chatfield and/or Coghlan. OR they're trade back someone equal cap to the double retained 19/88. OR 3rd would be a combination. Jesper fast while waiving Chatfield.

Yep - It’s so much stuff that it becomes very unlikely…and more likely the Canes just use Patches as the add, incorporating him back in. They could much easier make some sort of depth defense deal.

To me it's most unlikely because for whatever reason...Waddel doesn't really do rentals. I know this is a different topic entirely, but it's not hard to waive bad players. It's not really a reasonable thing to suggest the having Toews vs Stepan wouldn't improve the Canes either. It's not that it's hard, it's just that he doesn't do it. I was a HUGE supporter of Lehner to CAR, but the all mighty Jake Bean was WAY too much to give up back then. So we get the magical .895 SV% against TBL. Would Lehner have made a difference??? Who knows. Lehner did have 4 shutouts that playoff series. It really disappoints me that he doesn't try to win the cup as hard as other teams/organizations do. CAR has a great team. These windows don't open every year especially when we know other teams want it more.

Yeah, I've been slowly refreshing my memory. It's so overly complicated and there are so many rules where the language appears to contradict other rules, that I can never remember the finer details. Plus, I've been in tank/rebuild mode lately and not really thinking about this stuff. I get the point of these rules is to thwart teams from taking advantage of LTIR, but I feel like there has to be a better and more clear way to do things. Like maybe NOT holding the salary cap hostage and attempting to shift blame onto the NHLPA for all the stagnation. Or maybe allowing another level of LTIR for guys like Gardiner, who are never going to play again, to simultaneously collect what they are owed while not counting against the cap... Maybe after an extensive medical workup by impartial medical professionals. Idk. There are a lot of possibilities, I just know its redundant, contradictory, and overly complicated as it currently exists.

I can see a scenario where Määttä is traded but that very much depends on how the kids in GR develop the next two and a half months and also what the offer is. I can't see Yzerman accepting anything less than a mid 2nd for him.
