Poolparty is a bust. 2 years of big Ed is worth more than a low 2nd.

Start with Bourgeault or a 1st and we'll take your underachieving RW for cap purposes.

anytime you can give up a top prospect and a 1st for a guy who missed 68 games over the past 2 seasons and is about to turn 30, you just gotta do it, right?

In my personal opinion:

This is the type of defensive upgrade Edmonton should avoid. Not a big enough upgrade for what they really need but is going to cost a premium.

On the trade itself:
Puljujarvi has very little value. With his play thus far, i dont see him getting a qualifying offer.
Montreal fans will say a 2nd isnt enough for edmundson. Id disagree due to his recent injury history but GMs due stupid things like trade a 1st for chiarot so montreal will have an expectation of a 1st and a team will eventually be desperate enough to do it

Hughes seems to want to bring Quebec kids onto the team, so it's probably Bourgault+JP for Edmundson that he would want, but Oilers can't even afford that cap-wise.

I would predict that Edmundson doesn't help the Oilers enough as you suggested, and JP and Bourgault both end up being studs for Montreal.

Any GM giving up a first for Joel should be fired on the spot

Hughes current trades target underperforming young nhlers, already drafted prospects, and picks. Based on what minute eating defenders go for on the trade market, Edmonton is probably including Puljujarvi or Yamamoto. From there it would be a first or prospect and probably not both. Jp/Ky + Xb/1st.. is he worth that.. no... does it matter to gms... also no.

Holland has been gm for over 3 years now so his time has to be near over so maybe this will be the move that seals the deal

I actually think this is the type of upgrade Edmonton does need. I think he is a very similar player to kulak with more defensive aspects and probably less puck moving abilities. But Bouchard can be more of the puck distributor for the pairing and Edmonson could provide some reliability for Bouchard. Plus he has won a cup and would be great in the playoffs.

I agree Pulj doesn't have very much value at all. The only reason I could see Montreal picking him up is just to take a chance of flipping him for a pick if he ends up excelling in Montreal.

The pick is hard because Chiarot got a first round pick. I'd say it's fair to call Edmunson and Chiarot similar value but Edmunson does get hurt a lot. Plus although there is value in a second year left on his deal, there is also value in a guy on an expiring contract just because of the cap flexibility it provides next year. Ex) florida never would've given up a first for edmunson because they wouldn't have the cap space to keep him this year and would limit their flexibility going into the offseason
