Another top 6 TDL maybe

Description
Another top 6 target that would make sense for the Leafs IF the Blues are out of the picture.

Blues fans may not want to move Saad, but I also think the package here is market value. He isn't going to land a Panarin twice.... good yes. But not that good!
Transactions
TOR
  1. Saad, Brandon
Détails additionnels:
A possible TDL target of the Blues ate out of the picture.

Saad has a reasonable cap hit, decent term and could fit nicely on the 2nd line. Plays a gritty enough game too.

I am sure Blues fans will hate it.
STL
  1. Engvall, Pierre
  2. Robertson, Nicholas
  3. Choix de 1e ronde en 2024 (TOR)
Détails additionnels:
Blues gets a young contract controlled Roberston, who has top 6 potential. Quick and sees the game well. Maybe undersized, but given what the Blues line up looks like even going into next year size wise (they are bigger), Robertson should add something to that dynamic.

Engvall is thrown in to male cap work.

2024 1st I think must be included here. Where Insee Roberston matching Saad's output in a year, Saad brings something Robertson doesn't to the Leafs lineup. And let's face it..... you are landing Saad for Roberston straight up.

I debated moving a 2nd over the 1st, but I felt for the contract amd term it would have been light.

See Saad being a possible 50 point guy on that 2nd line.... which is what he always has been.

Lol I’m in. STL needs guys for next year considering they’re basically losing a whole line this off-season, but that’s tough to pass on.

Seems I am getting Blues approval. This must mean I will wake up to a plethora of hate posts from.Leafs fans lol

Usually how CF works.

Question is: since I debated a 2nd instead of the 1st, would you be equally inclined? Or did I get this right?

Probably still would do it although the Blues are gonna need veteran bodies.

Blues accept that.
I honestly think a 2nd round pick would suffice instead of the 1st.
Having Saad's grit and experience would also help the Leafs middle-six.

Interesting...... appreciate the honesty there.

Agreed vet bodies matter, but usually can land a UFA or two to round that out..... and if out, gotta think Tank is on the block. That return should be significant. Not sure about O'Reilly..... he says he really wants to stay, but again, the return should be good.

The way this sets up it looks more like a one year reset than full on rebuild...... something about Buch, Thomas and Kyrou lol

I appreciate the feedback all.

Seems a 2nd over the first still makes this a workable deal from the Blues perspective.

Let's see what Leafs fans have to say.....

Seems to be a consensus a 2nd would do the trick. I really did debate that

You know Saad and Engvall have the same number of points this year. He's really not worth his long term contract. His contract makes Bunting signing almost impossible Saad, an American doesn't waive, and retires with the Blues. Not saying "hits" mean anything, but since you brought up "grit", Engvall out hits Saad by a fair margin.
The easiest no from the Leafs.

I want to go the Colorado route

Bring in a few guys who can make an impact not just one

2022 COL brought

Lehkonen, Cogliano, Sturm, Manson, etc.

Leafs should do something similar.

I am aware.... but Saad historically really has been that 40-50 point guy and sandpaper doesn't mean hits (we both know that stat is so subjective).

Furthermore, the Leafs do have $$$ for next year to not only bring in Saad, but resign Bunting (I see him around $3.5 million) as I have to think the bottom 6 is filled in with internal options that (Knies, Steeves, Anderson).

I am surr you have noticed me post a couple of these maybe ACGM posts for a top 6 forward. Most I see are Meier lol. I have looked at Henrique, Mantha and now Saad as possibilities - not because they throw up points, but I see there game meshing well with what is currently going on.

I am sure I will try a few more too lol

That could be fun, I am not a fan of draining the system to pull that off.

Look at the Avs now..... the injuries pulled up. There really is no one in that system to step in. And I am not talking about replacing McKinnon or Landeskog, but a player that can step in and play NHL hockey competently.

Sure they won a cup with that approach. But now I wonder how many they will win with that core..... injuries and a serious cap crunch coming.

The Leafs conversely have the depth to make a move for sure. But draining the system makes me really uneasy. More than willing to move a Robertson or a Steeves etc (not Knies!) To make something happen.... just not willing to move them all.

That is exactly what the Avs did.
