Oh boy..... where do I begin.....
1. Bunting is not worth $5 million a year. Love the guy, but not at that price point. The Leafs let Hyman walk when he was getting similar money - and whose production and body of work was better. Realistically, I see a contract of around $3.5 million over 3 years as it sits right now unless he blows up. 40 point wingers are easy to find, and cheaper.
2. The JVR signing is atrocious. Full stop.
3. Klingberg is unlikely to sign for that little. If he were, he would be a Dallas Star still. Further to the point, Klingberg IS NOT the type of D the Leafs could use. In the absence of Muzzin (I think he is done), signing a physical D makes way more sense to offset that loss. Carson Soucy type guy..... affordable effective and slightly less who will not chew into Liligren's playing time (he has been very good this year)
4. Not a fan of the Craig Smith signing at all. Sure he has size (which is what I think you were going for), but doesn't use it the way you may want him to. Sooner take that money and sign a guy like Accari who is a very effective 4th line guy and does hit.
5. I don't mind Trevor Lewis, but I really think Anderson will get his shot.
6. In term of filling out the LW, the Leafs actually have some good internal options. Alex Steeves will push for a spot 100%..... his vision ad hockey IQ are there, and has a fabulous work ethic that would have hom pushing for 3rd line minutes. Matthew Knies is certain going to get a long look as well. On the blueline, if Connor Timmins can stay healthy, we may see what he can bring to the table. Loved this deal, a very good two-way defender with size and grit - health has been an issue.
I simply see money spent foolishly here. Morr than enough space to ice a 23 man roster with cap space to boot. Big names are pretty, but not what the Leafs need at all.
