Whether it's from EDM or not, what Kane eventually gets traded for (if he agrees to waive) will end up looking a lot like this. One reclamation project, one half-decent veteran who's overpaid for what he is, and two firsts.

That is A LOT. I appreciate that you think so, but I doubt it is THAT much more than what Philly got for Giroux. We'll see though. If the stars align and there is a bidding war, it is certainly possible. But at a certain point teams are going to walk away from talks, and I think this crosses that line. Unless there is a massive cap dump involved and/or more pieces going to the receiving team.

If Kaner is willing to waive to Edmonton, the Hawks accept this deal. The two 1st's speak for themselves. JP probably flops in Chicago as he won't have good linemates, which it seems like he needs to be effective. Ceci would just get bought out in June. Cap hit is manageable.

I think your take is spot on. But Edmonton gains $1m in cap space and gets Kaner for this year, and gets rid of Ceci's $3m+ cap hit for next year and year after.

Columbus declines. Not because Olivier himself is a keeper necessarily, but that trade is just more bloat the team doesn't need, and Olivier's cheaper.

True. But I wouldn't call Ceci a cap dump at all. Also, even if they get rid of his cap hit, they still need to replace him, and when the cap ceiling rises after next season (or possibly even after this season) the impact of his cap hit won't matter so much. Dude eats minutes, is more than solid defensively, and can contribute fairly well offensively. Not to mention he is a righty.

I couldn't figure why Ceci was in the deal to begin with. I agree he is a capable d-man. I assumed the original poster wanted to shed his cap hit. Do you think Hawks would play him w/ Jones n Murph established on the right side, and Mitchell and Regula needing NHL minutes at some point?

I think this is it - I only see a team needing to add another 1st if they need to offload a ton of cap (like $6M worth of 4th liner/bottom pair guys, for example) that Chicago wouldn't need. Ceci isn't necessarily a huge asset for Chicago, per se, but he's a fairly paid top-4 defensive D that would at least stabilize that team the rest of this season and potentially become a trade chip in the summer/next deadline. If I'm Chicago, JP/Ceci/'23 1st only needs another B-tier asset (interesting prospect/next year's 2nd/3rd? something like that) to bring it all the way home.

Yeah. That is the real issue here. No room for younglings. Unless they trade Murphy or Jones. Then again Davidson could be planning on trying to keep them in the AHL next year anyway. I'm not very clear on whether or not they would still be waiver exempt if/when they receive extensions over the summer, though.

It is a lot, but the Oilers are under pretty intense pressure to stop wasting the prime McDavid-Draisaitl years and frankly there aren't a ton of teams selling an elite offensive player. The only people who think Kane isn't an elite offensive player anymore are trolls on CapFriendly proposing that he ends up on their favorite team for a 2nd round pick and someone's bad contract.
