I feel with Demko's injury its time for Vancouver to fully rethink its position for 2022-2023

As I feel with that they should start maybe thinking about moving guys with value and for 2023 retool around Petterson, Hughes, and Demko

First order of business would be add some really good blue liners via FA or trade

Bratt is a restricted free agent so he has less negotiating power than Gaudreau does, who was unrestricted. I'd imagine if Bratt gets lowballed him and his agent would gladly look at offer sheets.

I understand that, but Lebrun is stating that he doesn't think NJ wants to pay Bratt more than Hughes, but they were ready to throw 9 mill at Gaudreau.

Feels like Rutherford is going to force Boudreau out soon, results be damned.

I think people forget that NHL players are closer to you in terms of finance than the owners. Yes, the majority of them are millionaires and the money they make through their career will likely sustain them through the rest of their lives, but the owners are billionaires. One billion dollars is a thousand million dollars; or a whole magnitude above.

Saying "players take less for the team" is a pro-owner sentiment; no NHL player should cut slack for their bosses because it's their labor that actually increases the value and revenue of the team and of the league. You should always support players getting the most money possible for their value instead of criticizing them. They only take less because it provides them extra job security as you said.

But there is a floor and a cap. So instead of arguing players vs owners, it’s in reality, players vs other players.

Players may take small discounts (like Bergeron and Krejci having low cap hits but a bunch of performance bonuses)

For Krejci and Bergeron, they took less than market value because they never considered going to the market. They had no leverage to push for more money because only 1 team was in play for a contract renewal ; their life is there. They took the most possible in those circumstances.

Plus it's so short term that it's not really about building a culture of a team-friendly (or owner-friendly as @mondo said)

And on the narrative "they left money on the table voluntary" (like MacKinnon tells reporters), it's always an argument that comes after the player signs the contract, so never at the moment of the contract because he really thinks the contract represent his value.

It tells more on the fact that the player feels like he got fleeced and his agent badly projected his value

My belief on Bratt is that Fitzgerald didn’t see 1-year deal as a problem since it allowed him that year to clear Johnsson, Tatar, Severson, Graves, Wood (~$20m) and give Jesper a prove it season.

Option A: Bratt gets 8y x $7m
Option B: Bratt gets 1y x $5.4m + 8y x $8.5m

With our cap situation, option B looked far more appealing. Jesper will get his pay day.

I don’t think Bratt vs Gaudreau is much of a comparison as they were coming from different buckets. Palat and Gaudreau would be a better link.

The most beneficial option for the players would be to remove the hard cap which can be accomplished collectively.

Bedard's gonna look real good playing between Gaudreau and Laine though

You overestimate our luck.

Adam Fantilli would be lit too but Connor Bedard is the ultimate prize

Honestly if CBJ could walk out with either Bedard or Fantilli they set

And if they get DET luck Leo Carlsson also aint the worst choice

I’d be against removing the hard cap for parity reasons, all the original 6 franchises + like Vegas, LA, etc would just be dropping cash left and right while teams like AZ, NYI, Ottawa that are smaller markets would have to start building bargain bin teams since they wouldn’t have the payroll others have

Personally I'd rather the league stop rewarding uncompetitive teams and frugal owners.

A soft cap limit with a system similar to Bird Rights along with a Luxury Tax would help solve these issues.

I feel Tampa goofed not utilizing Myers buyout

As they could have stoned it and brought him back on league min then used the extra cap elsewhere

Purely hypothetical (there is no right/wrong answer unless Twitter says so):
When I think of perennial IR-plagued clubs leading over the last 10yrs or so: I think off my cranium it's CBJ > PIT > MTL>VAN...
Could it perhaps be these clubs "conditioning team(s)" that needs an inquiry!?
