Any chance something like this could happen? I know Chicago is rebuilding, but they have tons of draft picks and maybe want someone else they can build around?

As long as Kyle Dubas is Leafs GM, Willy Nylander will never be traded.

Nylander is a better player than the best player on 1/3rd to 1/2 of the teams in the league.

I don't want to trade him, but realistically, I think it has to be him. Cap hell is a real thing.

The hope would be to resign Kane to continue to play with Matthews. The US connection.

Cap hell is when a team is bad and ladden with bad contracts.
The leafs are not in cap hell.
Moreover, there is no reason why nylander has to be a cap casualty.

Stop listening to the bagheads

And the mask slips off. This never had anything to do with the cap. You are a bag head. That makes sense.

More than one thing can be true at the same time in the real world bro. We can have a cap issue and want to make changes to the core of the team to try to, you know, actually make it out of the first round. I am a big Willy Styles fan, but the big 3 contracts are not going anywhere. Sometimes sacrifices have to be made. But if you just want to continue calling me names, feel free.

Leafs don't have cap issues though. The only people who believe that are those who wont even bother to look around the rest of the league and just listen to the least intelligent aspect of the fanbase.

In terms of the playoff issues - trading Nylander shows that you fundamentally do not understand why the leafs havent won and are just looking to make a move to make a move (and thats the most positive benefit-of-the-doubt explanation for your thinking).

If you dont want to be called a baghead, dont act like a baghead? Pretty simple lmao

What are the cap problems exactly? Are you assuming muzzin is coming off LTIR next year?

That always seems to be the case in a trade but when it comes time to sign him everything changes. Not that I make this trade, but do you make Matthews the highest paid player in the league and Nylander 10+ mil in 2 years. Or just let him walk for nothing?

Cap hell is when you can't afford your own good players because you have a bunch of bad contracts that can't be moved. TO does not ever have they issue.

Well think about it like this, Tavares only has 3 years left, Matthews might not even resign in Toronto. So, there will be change one way or another, doesn't require trading a player like Nylander. Plus, this team has been significantly different every 2 years even if the core is the same.

Thats a 2 years from now problem.
Besides, contracts and trades are reputation based, not value based. Thats why smart GMs can extract value in the nhl. He won't get 10 (or current % equivalent to 10 anyway - the cap explosion is gonna mess with valuations for awhile)

You sign Nylander if he's 10m or less, and let Matthews walk if making him the highest paid player means paying him more than 14m.

Okay, say you pay Matthews 16m, Nylander 10m, and Marner 14m, that leaves 0.5m for Tavares (or whoever the 2C is) if they wanted to sign the big 4 to the same 40.5m that they take now.

Actually I take that back, you sign Matthews and Nylander, and offer Marner 11m or the door.

The last option is letting Nylander go, sign Matthews 16m, Marner 14m, Tavares 5m, get a 5.5m Nylander replacement. I think that only works if there's an internal replacement for Nylander already.

There's nothing wrong with them reallocating the same cap to the same 4 players, unless the cap becomes flat again. They don't need to move the guy who is going to be the cheapest most likely. Matthews is their 1C but at 16m that's 2m too much imo. They will be looking for a 1 and 2C which is a huge issue but I think they would be better off for it. Basically they will have to choose between Matthews and Marner the way I see it unless the division is something like this:

14m Matthews, 12.6m Marner, 9m Nylander, 5m Tavares. If Tavares is willing to go as low as 2 or 3m, then it makes it much easier to sign Marner. They could lock Matthews this off-season and delay Nylander to the end of next (risk losing him for nothing), and negotiate the extension on Marner and Tavares.

JT makes $11 MIllion in 24 and 25. there is no negotiating a smaller contract.

Cap is gonna be expanding rapidly. Budgeting the way you are is worthless right now.

Sign Matts, figure out the rest. Besides - his slow start is probably helping us money wise right now
