No matter what you think of him, no player has ever gotten dumped with a 1st then proceeded to get a 1st in return the following season, it is unheard of. A 54 point pace center does not warrant a 1st, either. Maybe a 2nd

Edmundson may get a 1st, but it won't be from LA and it won't have a former 1st pick added as a sweetener.

tbh if it were like the Habs first (so moving from mid 20s to early 30s or so) it would make sense but mid 20s to late 50s/early 60s doesnt make sense considering the fact that Bjornfoot will likely be the caluber of Edmunson in a year or two

There is absolutely no logic in your comment. The value of a player is based on what he can bring to a team in the future, not how much it cost to acquire him in the past.

Pageau was on a 32 goal pace and a 54 point pace vs Monahan's 19.5 goals and 54 point pace. -0.9 WAR for Monahan this season, Pageau had an 8.5 WAR at the time. Monahan has also been steadily declining every season since 2018 while Pageau (at the time of the trade) was only improving.

This was actually a lot closer than I thought but a team like Colorado, who obviously uses advanced metrics, would not give up a 1st in the best draft since 2015 for Monahan

I think you need to look back through the records, here I will help you. 27 Y.O. Pageau whose career high is 43 points and just put 40 points for the Sens in 2019-20 was traded to the Isles for a 1st +2nd + 3rd. Dvorak 24 y.o. career high of 38 points traded for a 1st + 2nd. I see a pattern here, 40 ish point centers are going for 1st + 2nd minimum but somehow you thin a 50 point center won't get more than maybe a 2nd?! Yeah Monahan will get a 1st cause that has been the set price since forever for UFA 2nd line centers who are scoring at at least a 40 point pace.

it shows that no GM valued him having positive value. They viewed him as a burden on the team. That 3 mil shaved off is not gonna equal to the net value of two 1st rounders.

Pageau got a 1st and a 2nd I believe? Also... Monahan is playing with Dadonov & Armia. Pageau, who impressed the hell out of me because like 10 of those goals that season were against my Habs, played with significantly better linemates than 2 guys who by all rights should not even be playing in the NHL this season.

Forget about how much it would cost the Avs for a minute. Would you like to have Monahan as your 2C? Would he bring value to the team for the rest of the season?

One other point - Monahan spent 2 seasons dealing with bad hips. He's now a cyborg and his hips work great. While statistics work well to define a cohort as a whole, it does nothing to define a player like Sean Monahan playing in 2022-23 for "the worst team in the league in 2021-22" after 2 seasons of hip surgeries (one per year) and with 2 linemates like Armia and Dadonov.

If you need more context to form an opinion, maybe look at Eichel recently playing with his disk issue, or Andre Markov playing with his knee issues. There ARE outliers that the data does not account for and great GMs see those opportunities and capitalize on them.
