Toronto doesnt have much interest in downgrading. If they trade pick, it's to upgrade their forward group.

its an interesting idea, but it only make sense depending on what they would get with that capspace, so cant say if it really worth it until you know what you clear the cap for to make a move.

Leafs don’t need cap space either. No chance we give up a draft pick for the worse player

I think it makes sense as a cap clearing move with a bigger acquisition in place for Toronto.

Could something like this happen? Sure but it's not likely to. In reality the Leafs front office aren't like the CapFriendly Leafs community. They've never explored moving Kerfoot. They like that he can flex up an down the line up, to center, can PK, etc. If they were to move Kerfoot, they would need to get an upgrade at 3C back. Right now, if one of the top 2Cs get injured you can bet Kerfoot would be expected to step in. Moving Kerfoot sideways for a cap savings is too big of a risk in that regard. Cap wise the Leafs are pretty comfortable after the Muzzin injury. If they were to move out money to make some more room, it would likely be Engvall. A healthy Leafs roster(except Muzzin on LTIR) with Engvall moved can create up to $5,876,254 in space or more than enough to get everything done at the deadline.

If it comes to that they might just include Kerfoot in the deal for a big acquisition. But the Leafs cant really afford to trade a versatile forward like Kerfoot

They don't really need the space with Muzzin likely done, though. Kerfoot could also easily be the money out for no additional cost in said bigger acquisition - he'd be owed next to nothing by the time the deadline rolls around.

Leafs need Kerfoot's flexibility for centre and LW. Despite his "hands of stone", he can other things right. Just don't think Statsny improves the Leafs. But it's a good thought on the trade if the Leafs some cap space for another trade.

If we really need the cap space sure but with Muzzin's 5.6M all but confirmed on LTIR at the TDL we won't be terribly cash strapped. If we have moves that big at play where we need more than like 6 or 7 mil cleared out (trade Engvall would be preferred over Kerfoot, plus Muzzin's cap) than perhaps but I don't see that happening with retention possibilities from sellers that we'd be acquiring from

Kerfoot is just such a swiss army knife that's invaluable to this team, he's the next man up if one of the top 6 centers get hurt or if we need to hold a lead he gets moved up and down the lineup for matchups, just so useful even taking production and shot selection (or lack thereof) into account

even more in cap space no? Muzzin's 5.6M plus Pierre's 2.25? Around 7.85M in cap space unless its some kind of cap space LTIR accrual rule that I'm not familiar with

Leafs were over to start with and had guys on LTIR to make room. Murray's injury covered the load for awhile once the initial LTIRs were done and now Muzzin is doing the lifting. They haven't spent 1 day off LTIR this season. Don't worry, I did a quick mockup AGM team to get that number.

I thought you get additional cap space accrued when you have players on LTIR not cap taken off? I don't know the rules on that particularly well though

The Leafs have been carrying full 23 man rosters. They've never been low enough to get close to the point they'd be accruing space even with the shenanigans to start the season.

Big issue though is the pick, there's no reason for them to give up a pick. Statsny is 36, so his age is probably just catching up to him, while Kerfoot is just playing bad in terms of offense. The other thing is there needs to be an opportunity to acquire a big acquisition to present itself in the first place. Otherwise, Leafs could just ship off Engvall+Kerfoot for a big acquisition (with retention)+low cap hit player. The Leafs won't know if Muzzin is done for the season/indefinitely until his February evaluation, so they won't be making any big acquisitions until after which is probably when guys will be available anyways.

We've seen many Nylander/Pesce trades on CF. Now that the Canes are having trouble scoring, maybe the Canes might like that trade now. But the Leafs are just middling in scoring now, and need Nylander, and the Leafs defensive play has been good.
I agree with you, I expecting to see a Pesce trade.

Carolina needs the defensive help of Pesce more than the scoring reinforcements. At least Carolina is only about a month away from adding Pacioretty and Teravainen back to this lineup. Burns, Chatfield, and Coghlan don't exactly do much defensively, so Pesce is vital. He's a lot more valuable to Carolina than Nylander would be who would be... maybe the 3RW? Between him and Teravainen there would be a debate for the second line spot.

Agree with you. Leafs are kinda in the opposite situation. No forward injuries, but injuries to top Dmen. Muzzin for out virtually all year, Reilly will be out for about six weeks, Brodie out for about a month.
Holl has picked up his game, Liljegren and Sandin has been solid pair recently (they both missed training camp), Giordano...solid. Then 7th Dman Benn got injured. Gotta say the the team defence has been good. Surprised the Holloway has been so good at RHD.

I think getting Max and Teuvo into the lineup might be a start to correcting those scoring issues, but I'd still like a Nylander acquisition, even though it isn't likely to happen now. Only thing is we can't give up anything on defense right now. That's the only stable part of the roster at the moment. I'd go for a shot at Kane or Timo, or someone of that caliber. We'd have to do it with picks and prospects though. After we get some people healthy and back in the lineup I wouldn't be surprised to see some bold moves.

Did you really put Patrick Kane and Timo Meier in the same tier of player?

Except, look at the team. It's easily affordable.
