I don't think that's true. Grier wants the contract gone so he can build the team that he wants. He won't accept lowball offers for sure but he's not going to expect the same return Dorian got.

He'll want a top prospect, a decent nhl defenseman and likely a mid to late 1st and he isn't retaining more than 2 mil

I agree but i say he is willing to retain 25% to get a better return, If Karlsson was willing to waive for Montreal i’d ask 24 1st, (allowing top 10 protection obviously) Mailoux and willing to take back Hoffman as you can’t have both on the same team. with the 25% retention i’d ask for another pick (23 2nd) or a prospect.

25% retention is a big number for 5 years! With 25% retention I would throw in a pick and a stud (Harris, Baron or Mailloux) for sure. I think Gallagher has a NTC too but he might like to end it in San Jose and Karlsson won't get a cup in San Jose any time soon.

agreed but Gallaher while a solid player is no longer worth his deal and would only block our younger forwards from pushing for spots. 25% is a lot but if we get the 24 1st, 23 2nd Mailoux it helps the rebuild and the 25% retention is off the books when the 22 & 23 draft picks would be in line for their 2nd contracts so no harm there. can you retain cap but not actually pay the salary? cause if that was an option it would be a lesser value than actually eating the money.
