Dumo is on the 3rd pairing right now struggling in Pittsburgh and won't be re-signed. Kapanen has been a healthy scratch for 5 games and needs to have his next season dumped

I understand that, still seems crazy to basically give them away for nothing. like what Vegas did with Max Pacioretty to Carolina.

Truthfully I don't think the Leafs even want Kap back. There was a reason he was traded back to Pitts to start with. Its sad, his value has fallen off a cliff.

If Kerfoot is worth a third than Kapanen and Dumoulin are negative value. TOR never does this.

Only problem is that the Leafs won't due this purely for cap reasons, Kapanen at 3.2m for next year would be a tough sell. His production last year is more on par with Engvall's (2.25m) than Kerfoot's (3.5m). Yes, Kerfoot is on pace as Kapanen this year but that's only going to want Toronto to offer him 3m at most, and Kapanen less because his overall game isn't as reliable.

The Pens would need to retain on Kapanen for the two years. It could be Dumo at 2.6 and Kapanen at 2.8 or maybe Dumo at 3 and Kapanen at 2.5. The Leafs are at max contract so there would have to be another body going the other way, which then makes it pointless.

I could see them trade Engvall for Kapanen but I don't think Pittsburgh would be interested unless it's to ditch that second year. Retention would be required here as well even if the Leafs are taking back some cap. Engvall at 2.25m for Kapanen at 2.25m-2.8m (I would guess around 2.5m).

Leafs can't take on two contracts without sending out 2 contracts.
