Description
The Canes do not have a second line center to play behind Aho and they lack a second powerplay quarterback who can help drive offense for a unit that hasn't scored a powerplay goal all year. One solution would be internal by signing Morrow at the conclusion of the NCAA season to his entry-level contract and pairing him with either De Haan or Chatfield on the third pairing. The second solution would be to look externally for a center who can slide into the #2 C role and provide more scoring which the team desperately needs at the moment. For those who exclaim Jesperi has great underlying numbers, he's on pace for 13 points over 82 games. 13 points does not cut it for a guy paid $4.82 million to be a second line center. Not to mention, his lone goal was accidental, so he hasn't even intentionally scored a goal yet this year. On top of this, the guy played 10 minutes last night vs WPG, he can't be relied on when games get tight and the TOI from last night should be as clear of a wake-up call as can be. Ideally, if the Canes did trade for Horvat, you'd have to think they'd be wanting to sign him to an extension given the assets it'd take to trade for him. For the sake of the exercise, I'd speculate that he'd sign an 8 year, $7.25-7.75 million per year extension.

Yes they need offense right now, and it doesn’t help that 2 key offensive players are injured. KK isn’t getting it done offensively, but he has been getting it done defensively. They definitely need a C that can pick up the offense behind Aho, but right now, they need a scoring winger. The Canes are too defensively oriented right now, and with Turbo, Patches, and even Kase being out, the offense has definitely suffered.

What are you seeing that leads you to think he's playing fine?

He is doing well in preventing shots, preventing chances, FO%, and individual creating chances metrics. Even 10th in ixGs despite being bottom on shots taken.

Question on KK's defensive play, if he's been getting it done defensively, why doesn't he play penalty kill? I see what you're saying about bringing in a winger but once Pacioretty, Teravainen and potentially Kase come back, their weakness down the middle will be exposed, especially in the playoffs. They also don't have much cap room to work with so the long term need of a center would be more important in my opinion than the short term need of a winger who will just get pushed down the lineup to the 3rd or 4th line once Pacioretty and Teravainen come back.

Why doesn't Rod use him on the PK then?

As well as Necas and Stepan, but they are also typically paired with Aho and Staal respectively.

Im not a huge fan of using Stepan because he is slow but he makes smart plays.
