Where is the ‘rumor’? CF posts aren’t rumors…

Friedman mentioned that the Leafs are interested in Vatrano but that they can't make it work. People took the first part, and ran with it on CF and Twitter. By definition, the Leafs being interested in Vatrano is a rumor.

Canes are interested in every player who can make them better, so that is a ton of rumors….

exactly, that's the point of rumors? obviously not every rumor actually gets done but a lot get considered or discussed

I would say that isn’t a rumor, that is more speculation or in some cases these are people analyzing who would be a good fit…but it’s really not a huge deal. I just see so many people peddling crappy posts on here as rumors.

I meant the rumor is "the Leafs are interested in trading for Vatrano" and people are incorrectly attributing it to Friedman. He said there is interest in the player which could just be speculation on his part and that they probably couldn't make a trade work.

It's a baseless rumor since as you pointed out just because a team has interest in a player doesn't mean that they are actively trying to trade for him. It's still a rumor though and that's why I wrote end the rumor in the title. When I said "By definition...is a rumor" I meant CF posts can be sources of rumors, even if they are baseless. Rumors don't need to originate from "credible" sources.

I can just imagine this rumor being started because Verbeek chugged a can of Monster Energy, then hopped in the NHL GM Discord and Dubas was the only one online.

Not even close to enough. It’s gonna take Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, Lilljegren, Robertson, and 4 1sts to get it done. You may also have to take on Silfverberg’s and Henrique’s contract at full value. That’s the only way the Leafs get Vatrano.

Edit: Done laughing. I was thinking something more like Vatrano 50%+Klingberg 50% + Kerfoot+Engvall+Robertson+ 2023 1st + 3rd + one of Knies or Niemela or another two 1sts instead.

Nah, Bedard's ELC is too valuable. Maybe they can have a discussion about Matthews+Nylander+Robertson for Vatrano at 50% + Henrique+ Silfverberg next season.

I know Friedman mentioned it and some source said Toronto cant afford his cap hit (wrong) but honestly there might be a trade. I dont think his value is crazy high to the point we cant do it.

I put him in the options category. Hes not bad but if Ducks are asking for a 1st im going no as he and Jarnkrok rn doing the same level of production

But rn I feel defense should be priority considering Brodie's situation, Sandin's poor play, and Muzzin potentially being done

Yeah, the way I see it they would have to send out someone with similar production on the year, probably Kerfoot, and add a very good asset on top even without there being retention. Vatrano is just the winger version of Kerfoot who scores more goals. I think they could find a better situation out there.

I mean you're saying his value isn't high right now without realizing that Anaheim is going to hold on to him now for the very same reason. He's only played 18 games of his 3 year deal, so they've got plenty of time to see if he can rebuild that value before they flip him out - especially considering it really doesn't matter at this point since they're rebuilding. And, there's something to be said for hanging onto a guy that actually *wants* to be there - it was pretty obvious Anaheim was mid-rebuild when he signed over the summer, so it's not like anything's changed drastically in the time since then (about 125 days & 18 games, again.)

Not saying it can't happen, just can't see Anaheim doing it without it being an offer that blows them away - which, as you rightly put, is probably more than the Leafs would want to pay for a guy with 6 points in his first 18 games in Anaheim.

Which, finally, brings us back to the original point: Toronto might like Vatrano as a player, but any trade rumor should immediately be put to bed because the two teams don't line up at all.
