Calgary needs young, good players on their ELC. We're stuck with Coleman at 4.9MM and all our cap space from Lucic has gone to Huby and Weegar extensions. If getting Taresenko was the goal, you could just sign him as a FA and trade mangiapane for a solid ELC player or futures to manage the cap. Very few players produce at a stable rate past 28, and even fewer increase their production. The bell curve doesn't lie. Calgary will have Huby, weegar, Kadri, (and likely Lindholm) all signed on the wrong side of 28. Statistically, adding Taresenko to that mix only makes matters worse and cripples any rebuild in the future (see San Jose). Given how terrible Calgary is at rebuilding, I'd rather we restock the cupboards than take on aging players like we did through the Sutter GM era.
Valid points, especially using Mang to bring in a Solid ELC, but I think Sutter & Treliving are focused on winning in the next 2-5 years and will deal with the decline later by playing ELC's and waiting for those NTC's to expire or having them agree to waive, so they can move them out in 5 years with the alternative being buyouts.
Hopefully Coronato signs with CGY and comes to play after his College season, but until then, we need a bona fide 1.00PPG+ Finisher and Tank is more realistic to me than P.Kane. Matthew Phillips deserves a look but I doubt he gets it under Sutter, then again, Ruzicka was finally given a shot in the Top-6 and look what he's done with it
Sutter likes his Veterans, so I always take that in to consideration as well. I do believe it's a Faster Young Man's Game and Forwards are at their Peak Physical Conditions between 24-28, but Stars are Smart and given the all the latest health & training advancements, they're able to take care of their bodies and many are producing till 35+, again Ovechkin, Malkin, Pavelski & Bergeron are all still killing it
