If Caps miss due to too many injuries sell then retool

Description
Caps should just trade their UFAs for picks, let their kids play, then in the summer use those picks to acquire some more youth then contend again.

TBH this team actually looks pretty darn good, at least the forwards, the defense will need some work.

Someone educate me.

I'm seeing more and more TOR trades involving Jensen. What is it about his game that warrants the 2023 first round pick?

It's an honest question, before some people lose their minds. I genuinely don't know anything about him.

Nick Jensen is nowhere near a top pairing RD, His best season was last year in Washington with 21 points. In no way is Jensen worth a 1st round pick and this coming from a Wings fan that was a diehard jensen fan. he might get you a late 2nd but a 1st rounder is insane.

It’s hard to explain. Everything he does is honestly really good. Great on the pk. Ideal blue liner to have and he isn’t afraid to take the puck by self and create a chance. He has some wheels too. Good positioning too. Awesome in his own zone. Also has really good analytics I believe(last time someone posted this card it was high 90s if I remember right). You want him on your team. Played top pairing when Carlson was out and was amazing. Jensen is a great blue liner and very underrated

He's right handed and isn't a leaf so he's worth a 1st and obviously is the sole missing piece to the Leafs cup aspirations.

In reality he's a 2nd pair defender. A decent player but hardly worth a 1st.

Jensen's got great analytics, I'll link some of the easy to find ones here (GSVA has also been solid), but also looks really good from eye test. He's done well especially on the PK, but is also sound positionally and in his zone. My only real knock to his game is that he occasionally goes down to his knees/stomach to block a shot/pass too early, which ends up with him out of the play, but this is a rare occurrence. Has also gotten his point totals up since coming to Washington.

Edit: also has a very cheap contract which could get down to 1.25 mil with 50% retention.

Mayfield and Chiarot are definitely not worth 1sts. But both are big and physical. Jensen is not big so to those types of GM's who value size he's not getting a 1st and to those who value everything else, Jensen is not worth a 1st. It's dumb that better players who aren't just big don't get the same value but its the world you live in.

Feels like the values on Eller and Sheary should be swapped, I can't see any team getting any higher than a 3rd for Eller even with retention, but I think Sheary's affordable deal could net him a second for a team needing depth scoring.

I'm not an advanced stats guy, I'm not too sure on how to read them properly. But I appreciate you providing them.

How's his first pass out of his own end? Can he hang in the offensive zone while his team is cycling the puck?

Who says that Mayfield is going to get a 1st? I doubt he gets more than a 2nd round pick. And Florida was desperate for D so Zito overpaid for Ben Chiarot.

Good first pass, ever since his first season in Washington he's got a lot more patient with his passes, and is probably the 2nd best defenseman in exit passes, behind Orlov for Washington. As for Offensive zone time, from what I've seen he'll step in and move the puck around when he needs to, and though he's normally being the defenseman hanging a little further back in the play, he's used it to his advantage to make good plays when no-one expects it. He's also surprisingly good in 2 on 1 or 3 on 1 rushes (though the Caps can't stop going offsides for no reason when he scores).

Appreciate the feedback, and from you @capsfan2121 as well.

Just trying to envision if he's a guy that will quickly get the puck off his stick or if he's got the ability to hang on to it for an extra split second with his head up to make a smart pass.

Yep, had those same thoughts when Washington first acquired him (and when he struggled to be that guy in 2018-19 under Reirden). Thankfully, now that the Caps don't have someone best suited for working at Joann Fabrics as their head coach, Jensen has been playing like Washington expected when they acquired him.

At this current moment, probably not. Tverberg has some good numbers in College over the last couple of years. I'd personally like to see what he can do at the AHL level before (hopefully) making a jump to the big club.

But that's not to say that he wouldn't be a piece teams ask for in a trade.

I get that fans overvalue their own players. But you are both so so so wrong here, especially the Orlov take (sorry to be blunt).

Jensen: 21 points...hes a defensive defenseman. Why are you looking at points when you should know his game (being a Wings fan and all)? He does not specialize in the offensive zone, despite being really effective on the rush. Jensen is a completely different player compared to the time on the Wings (and the first two seasons on Wsh). He has been the most effective (eye test and statistics) for the Caps, and is a perfect stay at home / get the puck out of the zone defender. Plus, being on a great contract will entice teams. He eats up minutes, is very effective in the defensive zone, and can generate chances. Great on the PK as well. And is right handed, which is a need for many playoff contending teams. Just because the Wings gave him away for next to nothing doesn't mean he didn't develop into a very good player...

Orlov: Now this take is one of the worst I have seen in a while. Orlov has better stats than Lindholm, and look at the package he got (yes I know he is 3 years younger). His offensive stats are very good for someone who is also a stay at home defender and provides a great deal of physicality. "The season he's having so far"...he has been hurt for the last ~7 games. Last year, he had 35 points, with 124 hits, and a +25 +/- rating. To say he is "certainly not worth a 1st" just proves that you do not watch the Caps. Which is okay, I don't watch the Oilers (besides McDavid highlights). But don't say no if you don't know anything about the player...

You aren't selling last year's Orlov though. He's having a rough season so far, if that doesn't turn around he's not worth a 1st. Edmonton doesn't have the cap space anyhow, nor have they EVER traded a 1st for a rental (and neither has Ken Holland) so I think you're barking up the wrong tree.

Jensen is way better now than he was with the Wings. A top 4 defensive defenseman who is fantastic on his edges, very good on the PK, fast, and can put up some points is absolutely worth a first. Chiarot got a first at the deadline last year. That was for a left handed defenseman; Jensen is a righty and is better than Chiarot.

I don’t think the oilers are the team for Orlov, but saying Orlov is having a bad season and isn’t worth a first is objectively wrong.

Define "objectively".

Among the Capitals top-6 defenders, Orlov has the worst SA/60 Rel number, is tied for worst xGA and is the worst for SCA - despite getting the second FEWEST defensive zone starts.

He's been pretty bad defensively and he has a large contract to swallow.
