I don't hate this trade at all from a Sharks perspective. I don't know much about Barron but we are thin with D-prospects. We can take on Hoffman and then trade him during next year's trade deadline.

If Karlsson wasn't 9 years older than our oldest core player, maybe.

HABS are rebuilding and would not take that on. They have young talent in the System, Barron, Struble, Mailloux, Hutson etc.

It does not make sense today to make that type of trade. In 3-5 years when the HABS are contenders they might consider that type of trade.

Karlsson is better suited for a team like the Oilers who can send Barrie, picks and prospects for him

Tell me you don't understand the value of picks, without telling me you don't understand the value of picks. "Lotto protected" does not cover any picks that didn't win the lottery. Literally "lotto protection" covers only the 2 picks that win the lottery, they may not even be the first and second picks. If the 16th place pick wins the lottery "lotto protection" covers the 6th pick, so technically the 1st place team could still lose the 1st overall pick since it didn't win the lottery to be protected.

Value of picks is all up to the acgm here but give yourself a big ol pat on the back for still being wrong.
There is protections on that 1st... My understanding was lotto protection is top 10 protection because you have a chance at winning the 1st OA pick.

You are wrong yet again, the lottery includes all 16 teams that do not make the playoffs. However since any team can only move up 10 spots after winning the lottery only teams 1-11 have a shot at 1st overall, teams 12-16 can only move to the 2-6 if they win the lottery. Therefore only putting the lottery protection on the pick means that the pick is only protected IF it wins the lottery meaning if Montreal finishes dead last and have the 1st overall pick but a team in the 12-16 range wins the first lottery and any other team other than Montreal wins the 2nd Lottery then the Canadiens would have to forfeit the 1st overall pick.
