they've actually been trying to get rid of him since the off-season. his cap hit is not ideal and with McAvoy's return, he was placed on waivers again.

Bruins aren’t going to eat salary, that’s barley more cap relief than just hurting him. Take the whole contact for free.

Which of course ENTIRELY defeats the purpose for boston. You think they’re interested in losing reilly to save like 150K in cap? Not an effing chance.

If the phone call goes, “hey Sweeney, I’d like to give you a draft pick in exchange for retention on…” Sweeney is cutting them off and saying no. There is no realistic scenario where boston retains on reilly. It makes no sense.
