The Sens wouldn't do this if Formenton didn't have the alleged off ice issues.

The Coyotes don't do this if Fomrenton has the alleged off ice issues.

Brannstrom for Hayton makes more sense from a value perspective. (Aka, neither play have a lot of value) Even if Brannstrom is only the Senators #6 D, the Senators cannot move him right now due to depth issues.

Formenton is a leper, nobody wants him and Brannstrom is a bust you won't be getting a useful player for him either.

Hayton and Brannstrom are both busts.

That would be the point of swapping them. Similar to Patrick for Glass or numerous other times we have seen teams take a similar approach with struggling young NHLers who were previously highly valued prospects.

With what happened this week with the Bruins and Miller, no one is taking Formenton at all unless he is cleared of any alleged wrongdoing.

The Bruins signing Mitchell Miller and the Canadiens drafting Logan Mailloux should be enough to show that there will always be a team willing to get top young talent for pennies on the dollar in the hopes that any controversy will manageable. If Formenton was made available for a low cost, like a mid or late draft pick, someone would have taken him prior to this week.

I think with the Bruins situation ending so poorly for them, that isn't going to happen now. Teams who thought they could get away with it will be afraid of any blowback.

Brannstrom isn't a struggling young NHLer, he's a bust. Hayton isn't a bust sure he's nowhere near the player he was expected to become when drafted 5th OA but he's still an ok 4th liner.

Formenton, like I said nobody wants him... At all.

Brannstrom is actually playing quite well this year so im going to assume you don't watch sens games. By no means has he lived up to that 15th overall potential, but he has been playing well this year. There is a slivering hope that he is an extremely late bloomer like Tage Thompson but Branny has been playing like a top 4d this year.

As of today Hayton is the Yotes #1 center. He's not going anywhere this year.

His play is overrated by Senators fans.

He is playing well in a role as a sheltered #6D. The praise he gets reminds me of when Wideman was playing well in a similar role, and people thought he was a top 4D because he looked good playing minimal minutes against easy competition.

Brannstrom has not been playing like a top 4D. He has actually seen his role completely scaled back. That is part of the reason why he is playing better and is more engaged. He is being deployed as a sheltered bottom pairing D, and because of it, he looks better than when he was deployed as a top 4D last year. You also have to consider that the Senators have one of the worst d-cores in the league. Brannstrom would not crack the lineup on most teams.

He is probably more valuable than he was last year as an asset, because if a team needs a D-man to use on one of their powerplays they might look at what Brannstrom is doing this year and feel that they can play him for 12-14 minutes at ES in a sheltered role. Last year, outside of some exceptions, he looked like he didn't belong at all. The Senators might luck into getting a 4th-7th round pick for him at the trade deadline if they decide they don't want to qualify him.
