Leafs accept but I don't think we have to trade Marner, unless there is an issue of entitlement that cannot be fixable.

Let's forget the sign and trade scenario, it's just too hard to midseason
As a Leaf fan, like the Isle trade. The San Jose trade. might be fair, and maybe the Sharks can get more. Leafs just might be as happy keeping the first and not having Meirer and spending his cap elsewhere net summer.

Your joking if you think 8.5 gets Meier done long term with the new contracts coming out now and the cap rising in the next few years.

I think in "theory" you are addressing some of the issues Toronto seems to have (goalie, RHD, cap space...). Not grilling you on the contracts but they may still need to clear one up. However, if I am the Islanders I don't really know why I would accept this. Varlamov has been very good for them, and I think goaltending depth is crucial....as Toronto is experiencing. Just don't know why they dump him, a nice player in Mayfield, and Beauvillier for one player that is statistically an ugprade, a downgrade in Holl, and a downgrade in Kallgren. Plus, if they want to resign Sorokin....Marner's cap wouldn't really help that I'd imagine.

Yeah but the thing is that Isles is one of the deepest teams in the league but lacks a true star to play with Barzal, the depth they have in defense will survive with losing Mayfield/replacing him with Holl, Marner replacing Beauvillier (massive upgrade) and they could search for a reliable backup goalie to play 20 games, maybe Holtby if he recovers from his injury. But yeah they’re screwed if Sorokin gets hurt, but I think they are either way in that case, even if Varlamov of course is 10 times better than Källgren for sure.

I could be wrong but I thought I read this offseason that Holtby basically quietly retired. Also, I think Mayfield is just not worth giving up for Holl since they are both UFAs this season and he is much better. I also completely disagree that if Sorokin is hurt they are that screwed, Varlamov can certainly play in his stead just fine with your defense. If you are truly concerned about talent to play with Barzal (I still think guys like Wahlstrom will pan out but I am a fan of another team) I think you could make a trade for someone with a lower cap hit imo. They are also very similar players I think, you'd want more a goal scorer no?

Meier is gonna get +$10 for a 8 year deal with the way the market is rn, and memos going to teams with expected cap jumps in next 2-4 years.

He’s definitely not getting 10+ mil, zero chance.
