I agree this is a pipe dream, but I do like seeing people propose wild stuff on here rather than the usual "Kerfoot and Holl for three 1sts" nonsense

Also I think CHI would at least have to think hard on any offer that gets them out of that disastrous Seth Jones deal.

It's their only long term deal. He's playing well for them. They have a ton of cap space. And the cap is about to go up by a lot. It's literally not an issue for the hawks at all.

idk, he's a team-worst minus-5 I wouldn't say he's playing awesome (-37 last year). They have the cap space for him, of course, but cap space or not, paying this guy $9.5 m until 2030 is a bad deal.

Almost every team in the league has a bad deal. It's not worth trading jones until atleast half that contract is over or the team gets better around him allowing him to play better. Plus minus is a pretty pointless stat. Erik Karlsson was a terrible deal when he first signed. Now he's playing a little better and some years have come off that deal. He can probably be moved for positive value right now with some retention.

I'd buy that. Maybe in a couple years of crazy contracts for defensemen his deal won't look so outlandish.

Financially, logically, and logistically, there is absolutely zero reason to move Jones without getting a valuable return. Even if he was playing bad, which he hasn't been, he helps the team get to the cap floor over the next few years. CHI gave up far too much to not let it play out. Within the next few years as the cap starts jumping up and more players start getting paid, his $9.5M cap hit will look relatively commonplace. The problem with Jones is NOT his play, it's what a team that was supposed to be rebuilding gave up in order to acquire him. If Colorado had won the bidding war on Jones that summer and not overpaid him, like Bowman did, and he had a proper defensive partner last season and this season like Girard or Devon Toews or Byram, everyone would think he was amazing. A good player on a bad team can only do so much. And I'd say other than that one head scratcher where he was in the neutral zone for no reason, he has been playing his butt off this year.

Yeah I agree that it's baffling Bowman was allowed to give up so much for Jones given that when the trade was made the front office HAD to know what was coming in that report and that Bowman would either resign or get fired. You can't let a guy give away a bunch of assets on his way out the door when, as you point out, a rebuild is imminent.

Jones has some kind of NMC so trade talk might all be for nothing anyway.

Well, actually they had already announced that they were going to be rebuilding by that point. Then all of a sudden he threw a wrench in the rebuild and did everything he did before the 21-22 season. Which obviously didn't work out. And the more you look at it, the more obvious it becomes that Colliton was a huge part of the problem. That was a roster that should have at the very least been tough to play against. It is pretty crazy how big of a difference a coaching can make. Kinger spent the rest of the season trying to build their confidence back up but didn't quite have the defensive or special teams chops to put it all together, but they did look like a way better team in that second half. Not necessarily Colliton's fault, trying to be bold, Bowman pushed him too far too soon. But yeah, all of that was an obvious "last gasp" by Bowman to save his job, because they all knew what was coming.

Plus/Minus is the worst statistic in Hockey and tells you almost nothing about the player himself. I assume you are judging baseball players by RBIs still.

Pick your preferred stat, go ahead. What's the stat that makes it look like Jones was worth $78 million and multiple first round picks, other than ATOI.
