Trade Deadline Deal

Description
If the Canucks are still continuing to slump hard by the end of the year or the trade deadline, they could look to trade out Horvat who's a pending UFA and may not want to re-sign in Vancouver given the team's uncertainty (see his remarks about a Horvat jersey being thrown on the ice last year for further rationale). The Canes would be trading away one of their best center prospects in Ponomarev as well as a top-6 dman in Bear, and a depth dman in Lajoie as well as a 2023 CAR 2nd and 2024 PHI 2nd, the Philly pick likely being close a low to mid 30's pick in the '24 draft. This also could help Vancouver if they decide to tank for Bedard the rest of this year and provide them with a good long-term haul for a player who probably isn't going to re-sign. This also provides the Canes with a viable 2nd line center for a playoff push who likely wouldn't re-sign with the team and could slot down in the lineup on the 4th line as well dependent on KK's play as the year progresses (not saying KK's been bad to this point, he's been solid and consistent even though the points may not be there like Svech & Necas, but if he starts to trail off, if gives the Canes a solid 2C for the playoff push). Additionally, the team could look to sign and call up Morrow once the playoffs start and the Salary Cap goes away as he'd be a much better 2nd PP quarterback than Pesce in all likelihood.

I would take this personally, but idk if the canes would offer the package vancouver wants for likely a rental. If i were vancouver i'd be asking someone like bear, a decent prospect like ponomarev and a 1st. But the canes don't usually spend a ton on rentals.

Canes instead pursue Horvat in UFA. No reason to give a bunch of good assets for a player they don’t need and would more than likely walk at seasons end. Besides, no reason to screw KK over when he has been a vital part of one of the best lines in the league so far this season.

But for the sake of argument, assuming this does actually happen somehow, the lines would be quite a bit different.

Can’t see Horvat as a Cane unless he agrees to a long term sweetheart deal. Maybe playing games that are actually meaningful is worth more to him than money.

That being said, another reason Canes might not go for this is because they want a winning mindset in their players. Right now, I can’t see them making a move for a roster player from a team that has been compared to a country club.

As for the trade itself, and only if Horvat is willing to resign, drop both the 2nds and replace with the 23 first.

No reason for Carolina to do this. Thus far this season, Kotkaniemi has been better than Horvat. If things keep going they way they are in Vancouver and they way they are in Carolina, these two will not be trade partners for Horvat. Bear, maybe. But KK's line has been one of if not the best in the league to start the year

Not trying to screw over anyone, KK and Horvat could be interchangeable between lines. The Staal line has been a checking line with minimal offense for most of this year but they're typically always slotted in as the 3rd line with defensive assignments (especially when line matchups are in CARs favor at home) which is why they're listed above the "4th line" with Turbo even though the 4th line, whether Horvat or KK is centering, is not an actual 4th line but more like another 2nd. The main point of the trade would be to solidify the team up the middle, not saying any of the current centers are playing badly cause they're not, everyone's done their job and been accountable to date, this is more of a move that could be made as the grind of the season starts to set in and certain players in all likelihood have their play drop off a bit, it would bolster the scoring throughout an already very deep lineup a bit more to create more options for Rod as the playoffs start up and give the team the best players possible under the cap since they have this window of opportunity to make deep playoff runs.

I did. That statement is wrong. As of right now, Horvat doesn't hold a candle to Kotkaniemi, and that is not a statement many could have said before the season.

The Canes will need another month before drawing real conclusions about their need, if any, at 2C.

But if we are trading for any one that isnt a top liner from Vancouver, it is likely Garland. If Vancouver is open to a Bear and Noesen for cap purposes, Drury, and 2023 1st then I say we are more open to that than trading for a rental.

I understand where you are coming from. But KK earned his spot at 2C, and the results are already speaking for themselves. While KK hasn’t put up many points this season so far, he has been the defensive anchor that are currently allowing Svech to be a potential Rocket contender, and also to allow Necas to use his full potential. Which is why I reorganized the lines as I did. Bringing in Horvat would strengthen an already deep C core exponentially. There are a couple problems with the Canes making a move for Horvat. The first one is the cap, and how much space they would need for the off season the next year, when the core is due. The second one is a bit 2 fold. The Canes have historically not been a team to pay for deadline rentals. I mean, since 1997, their biggest rental was Mark Recchi in 2005-06, and the biggest piece that was given up was a 2nd rounder. They don’t move firsts for rentals, which Horvat would have a better than average chance at being, and Vancouver would be looking for a 1st rounder to be a part of the trade. So the only way Vancouver would be getting a first in return would be if Horvat agrees to a long term sweetheart deal, much like what happened with Staal when he was brought over from Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, the only way Carolina and Vancouver are trade partners is likely for Bear.
