Because he's the second coming of McDavid? No offense man, but Knies is highly overrated in Toronto because he's their top or one of their top prospects (some would argue Robertson is better). Knies isn't even ranked in the top 50 prospects by Button, Wheeler or Pronman this summer (all had Robertson ahead of him) so let's be realistic on who he is and isn't. But hey, swap out Robertson instead, they both can work for Chicago I'm betting.

If the leafs are ready to trade that kind of package, it should be for Chychrun.

Dont even think its enough.

Agree on Knies - hes a bluechip definitely, some leaf fans have him as the 2nd coming, but Kerfoot, Engvall, Holl collectively as 3 UFAs to be, making 8 mil has no value to CHI in the deal.

As well as CHI taking on 8 mil in UFAs they dont want, they are retaining 8mil.

Overall, maybe you get 2 of those guys from CHI but dropping all your UFAs on them adds no value.

Knies and two 1sts I think you're close (a little to and fro, depending on what you think of Murphy or if youre a CHI fan) get Kane and retention AND Murphy with no retention, and maybe one of the Leaf negative value UFAs

Yea i wouldn't trade Knies + 2 firsts for a couple rentals. I would go for a chychrun or someone else with term.

The best value for the Leafs is the performance per cap dollar - Patty Kane is definitely a superstar, game changing winger, but the Leafs have no shortage of high-end talent in Matthews, Marner, Tavares, and Nylander. Robertson and Knies are important in that they provide surplus value over the span of their ELC's. Knies isn't even signed yet and if he can provide just 50% of what Leafs fans are hoping he turns out to be for 3 years that's more years of competitiveness with this core. The most frustrating part of this team isn't the GM going for the big fish, or the lack of skill - it's the inconsistency in effort. It's not something the GM or perhaps even coach can necessarily fix, but I'm interested to see how they address it this year.

I think there's a limit of 3 contracts you can retain on, too. There's bound to be teams with more cap space fighting for a playoff spot that won't require the Blackhawks to use up all of their slots.
