Really? I mean they get rid of half of Jones' albatross contract, as well as 3 first round picks, one that is potentially going to be top10 one if VAN doesn't get a grip.

It's a long time to pay such retention but man they could make out like bandits here.

laugh laugh Kyle Davidson isn't eating $38,000,000 for 8 years on Seth Jones and $8,800,000 for 4 years on Connor Murphy. The only decent pieces is Lekkerimaki and the 2 1st round picks and Rathbone Poolman and Pearson are garbage. No way in hell does a rebuilding team eat that much salary. And besides Seth Jones has already said that he's not waiving for any Canadian team. Chicago 100% passes on that trade.

Hes overpaid by 1-2 million but not really an albatross since the hawks have basically no money on the books coming up and cap is (supposed) to increase a sizable amount over the next 5 years making the Jones contract way more palatable. Not to mention Jones is a minutes eater, top pairing dman, and for 4.75 mil for long term that costs the 3 firsts alone, probably more. Murphy is also solid and getting him for 2.2 for multiple years will cost you first+. Rathbone is an ahler and Pearson is another overpaid 3rd liner, Poolman is a pure cap dump and Van paid a second to get rid of dickinson so itd probably cost even more to get rid of him considering he has an extra year. This deal would never happen since retaining a large chunk for 8 years is unheard of but this is just a terrible deal for the Hawks.

If the cap increases it also makes the retention more palatable. CHI is completely set on rebuilding so whatever the loss of performance moving Jones would create now doesn't really change anything for this team towards at least their next 3-4 years, who cares if they drop from 29th to 31st.

Murphy is nothing amazing. I'm not a huge fan of the guy, and his statline defense wise according to sites like naturalstathockey and evolving hockey paint him as quite similar impact D-man as Justin Holl. First+ for him is a massive overpayment if you ask me, but given what happened with Chiarot I'll give you the benefit of doubt on that one.

Rathbone would likely be a NHLer in the Hawks. Dude was more or less a PPG guy as a D in AHL last year and is only stuck there because Hughes and OEL are very similar player types, meaning VAN doesn't have room for him.

I agree on Poolman being a cap dump though. He doesn't add much to the trade.

I think this trade will hurt CHI to a certain extent, but not during a timeframe that would impact their status that much as they were going to be bad regardless, and it also has huge potential to turn into something truly great for them in terms of those picks, as well as Lekkerimäki and Rathbone as prospects. Yes, CHI takes here a bit of a hit short term, but they also could gain a lot of positives from that.

Would this trade ever happen, of course not, the whole thought of a team retaining for 8 years is foolish, as well as the concept of Jones waiving for a Canadian team, but I think this trade isn't as bad for CHI as people seem to think in a longer scale.

Jones is 1-1.5M overpaid at most and playing on a **** team. If he had gone to Dallas last year for a similar package (they were the runner up) there would be absolutely zero people complaining about him.

He is signed for 8 more years, 4M retention is absurd. Jones could certainly be moved in the next year or 2 but if anyone thinks Chicago is retaining more than 15% they are out to lunch

Tbh if DAL had wasted the amount of assets CHI paid for him I'd be so freaking mad. Very happy we decided against doing that.

Maybe, maybe not. You might have actually beat Calgary last year. Jones is such a massive upgrade on Suter

Excluding this season because Jones' massive signing bonus has already been paid, he's owed $66 million over the 7 seasons remaining on his contract. So that 50% retention means that the Black Hawks would be paying $33 million for Jones NOT to be playing for them. I just can't see any GM doing that. You can argue that sending Myers or Ekman-Larsson the other way could work, but any retention would only be to balance the books, in my opinion.

We're not interested in Dermott. Hughes, yes, but you're not trading him because we're not trading Byfield.

We would've had to cut the money from somewhere else then, and honestly game wise it's not a secret that Otter kept us alive. DAL didn't take Flames to G7 cuz they were good, but because Flames were bad - which was effectively proven against Oilers in the next round.

I did the math the other day Dallas could have fit Jones just fine on like a 22 man roster last year. The crunch would be this season nut that's probably as simple as not getting Marchment and having to move Dobby.

Otter played put of his mind that series. Calgary didn't play bad. Hell Calgary went into the Edmonton series and was in complete control game 1. It just fell apart after that

End of the day though it didn't happen and he is in Chicago

I don't know how many times I have to say this, but JONES CONTRACT IS NOT AN ALBATROSS. An argument could be made that he is overpaid by 1 or 2 million, and you can make an argument that CHI (a team that was supposed to be starting a rebuild) gave up way too much to acquire him, but all this stuff about him being an albatross is WAAAAAYYYYYY overblown. He is still a bonafide top pairing high end right handed defenseman. Also, CHI has no need to get rid of him.
