Quoting: CFMan
Hes overpaid by 1-2 million but not really an albatross since the hawks have basically no money on the books coming up and cap is (supposed) to increase a sizable amount over the next 5 years making the Jones contract way more palatable. Not to mention Jones is a minutes eater, top pairing dman, and for 4.75 mil for long term that costs the 3 firsts alone, probably more. Murphy is also solid and getting him for 2.2 for multiple years will cost you first+. Rathbone is an ahler and Pearson is another overpaid 3rd liner, Poolman is a pure cap dump and Van paid a second to get rid of dickinson so itd probably cost even more to get rid of him considering he has an extra year. This deal would never happen since retaining a large chunk for 8 years is unheard of but this is just a terrible deal for the Hawks.
If the cap increases it also makes the retention more palatable. CHI is completely set on rebuilding so whatever the loss of performance moving Jones would create now doesn't really change anything for this team towards at least their next 3-4 years, who cares if they drop from 29th to 31st.
Murphy is nothing amazing. I'm not a huge fan of the guy, and his statline defense wise according to sites like naturalstathockey and evolving hockey paint him as quite similar impact D-man as Justin Holl. First+ for him is a massive overpayment if you ask me, but given what happened with Chiarot I'll give you the benefit of doubt on that one.
Rathbone would likely be a NHLer in the Hawks. Dude was more or less a PPG guy as a D in AHL last year and is only stuck there because Hughes and OEL are very similar player types, meaning VAN doesn't have room for him.
I agree on Poolman being a cap dump though. He doesn't add much to the trade.
I think this trade will hurt CHI to a certain extent, but not during a timeframe that would impact their status that much as they were going to be bad regardless, and it also has huge potential to turn into something truly great for them in terms of those picks, as well as Lekkerimäki and Rathbone as prospects. Yes, CHI takes here a bit of a hit short term, but they also could gain a lot of positives from that.
Would this trade ever happen, of course not, the whole thought of a team retaining for 8 years is foolish, as well as the concept of Jones waiving for a Canadian team, but I think this trade isn't as bad for CHI as people seem to think in a longer scale.
