Description
Let's stop pretending we are a cup contender this year. Instead, we should fully embrace the tank with the understanding that it'd be for this year and this year only. Let's focus on restoring the locker room dynamics we had last season with an emphasis on having fun, working hard, and developing talent. The last being the most crucial as it allows younger players the luxury of making mistakes and treat them as learning opportunities. My biggest concern from what I've seen so far this season is how tense everyone within the organization is. I'm worried the locker room culture is becoming more and more toxic by the day as players, coaches, management, etc. feel pressured to deliver a cup this year with less talent than all of the other cup contenders.

That being said, I realize that we aren't bad enough to out-tank Chicago, Arizona, Columbus, and Montreal. We'll also have some competition from Philly, Vancouver, San Jose, Anaheim, Buffalo, and plenty others. So when I say "tank", I mean "finish in the bottom 10". The lower, the better. But I also recognize that we're Minnesota. We can't have nice things. Meaning no Bedard, Michkov, or Fantilli. Maybe we get lucky in the lottery and move into the 4th or 5th slot....but I doubt it. Fortunately, this next draft class is loaded with potential franchise centers. I'd still like to be in the top 6 just to be safe; however, unlikely that may be.

My plan would be:
2022/23 - down year, draft franchise center
2023/24 - playoff contender, 2nd round
2024/25 - cup contender
2025 and beyond - cup favorite

Although that may sound ambitious to expect a dynasty 3-4 years from now, I believe in GMBG and Brackett. Also, most of our key players are locked to long term deals so we don't need a full rebuild. The cap penalties may be a blessing in disguise as they force us to get creative, develop talent, and prevent us from overpaying players based on knee-jerk reactions brought on by the cap increase due to some fallacy that we need to win now at the future's expense.

========== Transactions ==========
Sign 1-2 giant bullies at F to take pressure off the GREEF line and give them a better chance at staying healthy. Or at least 1-2 players that won't get pushed around since that can demoralize a team.
No major trades as there is zero reason to blow up the roster. Maybe trade an expiring contract at the TDL but it's not like we'll be able to fetch a high draft pick. Plus, we have enough prospects to develop as is. We need another super star, not more depth players.

========== LINES ==========
Nothing too extreme. Only changes I'd recommend would be to:
1. Put Rossi on the 1st line w/ Kap & Zucc so he has linemates that'll remind him that he can have fun and work hard, the two aren't mutually exclusive. What stood out to me during the VAN game was how tentative Rossi played. He looked like he was afraid of making a mistake so actively avoided situations where he'd receive the puck. The assignment wouldn't be permanent as I think he's best served playing alongside Boldy in the long run. But he first needs to relax and redevelop his confidence. Otherwise, he's never going to make it.
2. Ensure that we always pair a smaller defensemen with a larger one so our lines are balanced.
3. Stop changing the damn lines every period. Evason, we get it. You got (rightfully) criticized for not making adjustments during the Blues series. But you (and the rest of the team ftm) need to move on. Give line combos a few full games before making any adjustments. Stop with this mantra of players needing to "earn" playing time and shift to a "just do your job" approach. Keep it simple.

Gauthier was on waivers and went unclaimed already. If anyone wants him, I'm sure a deal can be made for not that much.

If I'm Lou, I'd be fine moving that pair for something like a 4th/5th rounder and a lottery ticket D prospect (Marshall Warren maybe?)

With the way Minny has started the year a unprotected first in 23 might do it. We are no longer completely barron on the right side.

I just don’t see a scenario where Dallas would move a guy they just took in the first round. Dallas doesn’t have any immediate glaring roster needs. Nils and Harley should bridge the gap to Bichsel and Kyrou nicely. Trading Bichsel for a 2023 first makes zero sense for Dallas. And Minny isn’t trading an unprotected first for a guy Dallas took later into the first round last year. Even if you want them to

You are both correct. However, I realize that we didn't claim neither of them when we had the chance which is why we'd have to settle for trading for him. Same goes for Ratcliffe and Koivula. Unless I have a fundamental misunderstanding with how waivers work.

Also, these are just players that stood out due to their height/weight measurements....which obviously isn't a good reason to trade for a player. I'd love for some suggestions on more realistic targets from folks like y'all who know more about the available players than I do. I'm very in-tune with my team but not so much with the other 31 teams.

My only point was he could not crack the Rangers starting line up, so I'm sure Drury would trade him at a very reasonable cost. I don't know what that is because he waived him and took a chance of losing him for nothing like what happened with Hunt. Maybe a mid round draft pick, 4th or 5th round may get it done.

If you want to develop talent send Rossi to the AHL. Throwing him to the wolves as Kap's center isn't going to accomplish anything good. His game just isn't currently NHL caliber.

The problem I have with that is I don't see Rossi growing a whole lot more in the AHL. He dominated in the OHL, he dominated in the AHL, he dominated in training camp, and he dominated in the preseason. Yes, he needs to add strength and speed. But that comes with time, regardless of whether he plays in the AHL or the NHL. IMO his biggest issue is lack of confidence. Last game, he legitimately looked afraid to touch the puck. And not out of fear of getting hit but of making a mistake. And he's not alone. The team has looked tense all season as if they haven't gotten over last postseason's early exit. Nearly every player is trying to do too much and making a ton of mistakes because of it. Now I will grant you that Shaw and Steel have looked far better than Rossi but the difference is that the first 2 see themselves as underdogs with something to prove while Rossi is expected to become our first franchise center in team history (even if he most likely tops out as a 2C, maybe 1C-B). I also disagree with the notion that we'd be "throwing him to the wolves". If you would have asked 2 days ago whether I Rossi should play on the first line, I would've said no. However, after re-reading Russo's pieces on the Kap+Zucc bromance, as well as the profile on Zucc when he first joined the Wild, I couldn't help but be reminded of how similar Zucc and Rossi are. Both are brilliant with the puck, undersized, lacked confidence when joining a new team (Zucc talked about how he tried to fade into the background when he first joined the Rangers, then again when he was traded to Dallas, then AGAIN when first joining the Wild....despite being a veteran), and are super competitive.

Look at Colorado's handling of Newhook. Despite getting off to a terrible start (0 pts in 4g and the worst player on the ice), their coach has made it clear that he's giving Newhook a "very long audition in the role". I firmly believe that's the mentality we should have with Rossi. Let him marinate for a bit in the league. If he still hasn't shown signs of improvement a month from now (averaging 12-15+ minutes/game), then we can send him down. But at least give him a chance to shake off the "first season jitters".

Putting up points and dominating are 2 different things. Rossi wasn't the best player on the ice in the AHL last year. He wasn't even better than Dewar, Rask or Rau. Boldy, when he was in his stint, was the best player on the ice for both teams. Even in the preseason games Rossi was fumbling the puck, behind the play, and floating. Beckman the preseason before was the same way.

Guys like Dewar, Shaw and Steel are fighting for their careers. They know this could be their last or only chance to be NHL players. Rossi is currently missing that edge to his game.

I agree he is like Zucc. The problem is Rossi is playing center not winger. Everything about Rossi's game screams winger in the NHL. He just doesn't have the physical size and/or speed to play center, and those are the 2 things that can't be learned.

The team is struggling, but some of that is the goaltending being awful and playing from behind the entire game. Part of it also just a regression to the norm for Foligno, Hartman, and Freddy G after spiking a career year. They would make a great 4th line, but they aren't top-6 players.

Another big difference between Newhook and Rossi is the coach wants (or at least is okay with) him in the lineup. Evason wants nothing to do with Rossi, just like he wanted nothing to do with Addison last year.

He was waived this year, no? Yes, the Wild didn't capitalize on that but I wouldn't consider a player to be untouchable (as your wording implies) if they were recently on the waiver wire.

Totally agree with everything you said. I appreciate the added insight. I'll admit that I didn't closely follow his stint in the AHL last season. I just took the word of Tim Army during a Russo podcast, as well as the stats he put up as an indication he was dominant. @wabit in your opinion,
          1. how far away is he from becoming a full time NHLer?
          2. what do you consider his ceiling to be?
          3. which players in Iowa would help Rossi boost his game to the next level?

          1. It depends how he develops. I think a midseason callup and reevaluate from there.
          2. His ceiling is basically Zucc, 1st line winger.
          3. Iowa is trash right now. It's not about which players can help Rossi, he needs to be "the guy" that drives everything and play without the time and space. He floats too much instead of being involved in the play in the NHL.

The end of season exit interviews with Army where very pretty enlightening. He though Dewar was the best player on the Iowa team last year. He also said Rossi had a good rookie season, but had a lot to work on with his game before he can make that next step.

Yeah, his take on Shaw was pretty interesting. Saying he's better off playing 8-9 minutes in the NHL than 20+ minutes in the AHL since he only drives to the net in the former case. I also liked his take on Beckman, reminding everyone how long it takes most athletes to build up muscle mass. As well as, the linemates he was paired with. Not to mention the insane amount of injuries and roster changes they went through.

As for Rossi "floating", that's something I've never gotten my head around. At every level I've seen him play, he tends to just float around the ice yet very few (if any) coaches, scouts, nor experts bring it up. In fact, they often commend him for his work ethic, insane drive/competitiveness, and excellent positioning. So I've been reserving judgement and chalked it up to him "working smarter, not harder" -- cuz they must know more than I do but I do find it odd how someone that plays so passive is attributed with characteristics that are the antithesis of passive play.
