Can Ottawa Actually Fit a Top 4 Dman next year

Créé par: Claesson4Norris

Description
Assuming Ottawa fills all of the openings in the lineup with guys on ELCs (or UFAs at a similar price I guess), and none of their current young RFAs play well enough to get meaningful raises (Brannstrom, JBD, Kastelic), the Sens are left with less than 2mil to fit a top 4 Dman if they want to keep Zub. And frankly a good chunk of that could end up in the pocket of Shane Pinto, he could easily price him out of general 3C price points and be closer to 4mil+.

Yeah, I think this is a pretty good team, I just don't see how Ottawa fits a Chychrun/Severson/Whoever going forward.

Pinto won't sign 5 years at that cap hit, especially depending on how he does this season.

But other than that, yeah, those contracts look reasonable.

Just got to get through that last year, then the Murray and Ryan deals are off the books, and the cap will explode in growth.

Yeah, realistically Pinto deal is closer to 3 years.

A good chunk of Ottawa's money in 24/25 will go directly to Jake Sanderson, but between dead cap clearing and a huge jump in the cap they should still have some money to play with.*

*Assuming Jake Sanderson hasn't established himself as a Norris level Dman by then.

It would be nice if all their young d prospects keep progressing! It is more realistic that one of those young guys struggles and doesn't pan out, but if they all pan out, I really like the look of the team! Fair contract for Zub here also.

Clever to generate traffic by listing maple leafs (even though you don’t actually propose a trade), so since I’m here … like the look of team (good young core but lacks elite talent). I just don’t see how the SENs can spend to the cap for an extended period. Maybe if / when new arena comes but even then, doubtful.
For that reason, I don’t see debrincat signing long term deal. And I may be wrong but have to think suspensions are coming for batherson & formenton.

I also think investing in a decent backup goalie for a year isn't a bad idea given that Sogaard has looked so hot to start the season this year. Hopefully he can bounce back and nab a few games this year like he did last. Safety net approach isn't a bad idea. Can always claim someone off the waiver wire.

The money allocation looks right. I'd like to think you can shave half a million or more on Cat's contract and just work out the structure to pay him 9 million in the first year to act as his "qualifying" bonus.

Ideally, yeah you'd like a more proven backup next year vs throwing Søgaard into the fire. I'm not totally sure what the goalie market will be given Ottawa won't have a big budget to allocate for the position. If you can find a good option for like 1.5mil, then sure, but I'd probably run with Mads vs picking up some career 3rd stringer just because that's what they can afford.
