I LOVE this signing. He's such a great depth piece for this team. An experienced C with ties to the city and history with the team. Brings more playoff experience than anyone on the team, and he's got WAY more utility as a 13th forward than Gambrell. Better faceoffs, better defensively and can comfortably slot into the top 9 when there are injuries. It's just great to have him back, I always loved him in Ottawa.

All joking aside, the Zib trade is fine when you acknowledge that he would have been bridged and traded anyways during his last RFA year. The only possible argument I can see is that Zibanejad would have been an upgrade on Brassard for the 2017 run. GIven that Zibanejad didn't break out as Jagr-lite for a few more seasons, I think that is debatable.

Ultimately, what the Senators got from the Penguins for Brassard is probably more than what they would have gotten for ZIbanejad as a rental during the tear down. Duchene got a 1st and two B or C prospects, so that's probably the ceiling for Zibanejad as a rental. If ZIbanejad never breaks out in Ottawa like he did in New York, they get a lot less.

If there is a reality where Ottawa would have extended Zibanejad long term, then yes, the trade is one of the worst of all time. Looking at how the team operated from 2017-2021, with every single star from the previous build bridged and traded, I don't think that Zibanejad would have been handled any differently.

Vote no to prove you're a wiener.

Anyone who did vote no, I'm guessing the reason would be a 30 + year old stealing a 4th line spot from a 20 something year old.

The 4th line is where you stick all the journeyman players. You're in your 20's, if you can't make the top 9, then face the fact, maybe you're an Ahl'er.
