My Thoughts on Barzal

Description
For the time being this contract is an over payment. However given the fact that he played in a defensive minded structure for four years and never had an elite right winger. His point total could go up to 90-95 points. He needs to shoot more because his goal totals is mediocre but he still an elite playmaker and puck carrier. I think if you put him on any team like Bruins, Rangers Blues he would reach the expected point total

cap is going up, this extension starts after this season, and you need to pay for franchise players. This will take him through his prime. It is a great deal because there is no chance he gets anything less.

I think he would get less on a contender

He’s the Isles best forward by far so it’s normal he gets paid
Nick Suzuki might now be worth close to 8M right now but he is MTL best forward so he get paid. If he was (Suzuki) on a contender he would have get less, but that’s how things work

Barzal is alone worth it for the reason that he's the last player the Isles have before they become the most boring team in the league

Lee, Eberle, Palmieri, etc. He has had some good wings to play with….guys who can bury the puck. But his best offensive year was when they had Tavares. Maybe, instead of a winger, another top-6 offensive center would help his production?

Palmieri was awful with Barzal, it’s not like he was playing prime Palmieri.

Barzal was an elite 1C from 18-21, especially at even strength. His point per 60 rates were better than a lot of 1C. Tavares had nothing to do with his great rookie season, it was the system and his linemates (Beau and Eberle) . Trotz never reunited then

If they could add one of the following next summer, which would produce more offense?

(1) A top-6 center, who can fly in transition, drive a line.
(2) A top-6 winger, who can snipe, boost a Power Play.

(I don't have an answer...just curious what others thought)

Brock Nelson is very good in transition and can drive his own line. He's played like a 1C for two out of the last 3 seasons. That being said, I wouldn't be suprised if Nelson shifts to wing to allow Raty to be the 2C next season. Something like:

Beauvillier - Barzal - Wahlstrom
Nelson-Raty- UFA or trade

I would say a top 6 winger with above average skating ability is more of a need, it doesn't have to be a sniper. The isles have finishing talent, they just choose not to put them in a position to succeed.

If Raty were capable of 2C duties next year, that would check a lot of boxes for them.

Alternatively,

Beauvillier -- Barzal -- Wahlstrom
Nelson -- Larkin -- Palmieri

...could do some damage.

Will be interesting to see how they look under Lambert.

Unfortunately I don't think Larkin will get traded. I don't think Raty will be a big point producer, I think he's more of a 25-25 guy who thrives in transition. He has a lot of similarities to Danault. He should be a good fit.

Agree on Larkin staying in DET...but as pending UFA, he was easiest example.

Been a while since I've done an Islanders ACGM. Maybe I'm due.

I was not aware Larkin will be a UFA. I thought he was an RFA with arb rights. I would definitely be down to sign him If its a fair deal and he shows he can stay healthy this season.
