Bobcat’s Post Game Notes, Game 1
Jackets lose, 4-1 against the Carolina Hurricanes .
-Well, here we are! The beginning of the 2022-2023 NHL season! I’ve been waiting for this with baited breath since… basically the start of the playoffs. Feels amazing to hear Jeff Rimer and Jody Shelley calling the action once again.
-Again, I’m not sure what Lars sees in Mathieu Olivier. They’re running him on the 4th line with Robbie and Sean, and Danforth is on the third. Liam Foudy is currently scratched, and I believe that he’d be a better fit on that 4th line, since he’s got heaps of speed just like Robbie and Sean. Maybe this is just me judging a book by its cover, but I don’t like this.
-Secondly, they’re running Zach and Adam as the top pairing on defense. Uh oh. I guess we on ACGM were wrong about him being on the top pairing.
-Rather unfortunate that the King is out sick. In comes “The Leaning Tower Of Novokuznetsk” Daniil Tarasov on only his 5th NHL appearance. We have JET GREAVES backing him up. If Tarry gets off to a slow start, then we are capital F F*cked.
-Lastly, I am SUPER STOKED to see how Johnny Hockey does in his CBJ regular season debut. Don’t let us down, Jonathan.
-This team looks SO MUCH GRITTIER NOW! We aren’t afraid to throw the body around and knock some folks off the puck. I like this.
-It’s SO cursed to see Brent Burns in any other uniform besides a Sharks uniform. I genuinely thought he would have retired a Shark.
-Gus Nyquist tried that one behind-the-back no-look pass he did once last year, but it didn’t work. Bean got stopped by Frederik Andersen. Rough.
-Johnny Hockey’s forecheck has looked pretty solid. Not something you see often from a guy who’s 5’10”.
-Erik Gudbranson finds himself on an island for a 2-on-1 (since Jake Bean pulled a Jake Bean) and masterfully diffused the situation. Still not worth 4 mil per year, but still, great defense.
-Both goaltenders have looked rock solid as the first period fades to black. I love me a good offensive smokeshow, but Goalie Battles? I ADORE those.
-PATRIK LAINE SCORES OUR FIRST GOAL OF THE REGULAR SEASON!!! A great shot off a loose puck that took only 11 seconds off the opening faceoff! That’s $1,000 for the homeless!
-Brent Burns gives Boone Jenner the most egregious cross-check I’ve seen in a long while, and… no penalty!? Weird…
-Jack Roslovic makes a bad pass that was allegedly to Vladislav Gavrikov that Seth Jarvis reads like a book and puts it behind Tarry. Tie game. Ouch.
-…oh god. Oh dear god. No. No no no. Laine just hurt himself on the boards. Why did it have to happen to him? Of all people? In the season opener?
-Gavi makes a gonzo pass himself directly to a Cane (couldn’t see which one), but Tarry makes a good save.
-Laine’s off to the dressing room. Let’s hope he’s okay…
-Brett Pesce gets sent off for interference. First PP of the season, let’s go!
-COLE SILLINGER, YOU F*CKING ROCKSTAR. Silli finds himself 1-on-4 and spin-o-ramas his way into a shot that blows by Freddy…
-…IS WHAT I WOULD HAVE SAID IF WE DIDN’T GET SCREWED BY THE REFS FORGETTING WHAT THE OFFSIDE RULES ARE. To be fair, one of Boone’s feet is over the line, but the other is ON the line. As far as I know, an offsides call is the exact same as a goal; you have to be ALL THE WAY OVER THE LINE for it to be considered offsides. BOONE WAS NOT ALL THE WAY OVER THE LINE. UGH.
-Calvin de Haan gets sent off for interference on Johnny Hockey. Pick on someone your own size, Cal!
-After an uncomfortably long battle in the corner, Silli gets sent off for slashing.
-They don’t do anything with it, but they score a few minutes later, when Brady Skjei takes a shot from the blue line that gets deflected in. Not much Tarry could do there.
-The third period was a blur until Martin Necas scores on a wrister that blows by Tarry. 3-1. Shoot.
-Andrei Svechnikov takes a harmless shot from a difficult angle, and somehow, someway, it hits the back of the net. If he’s just gonna style on us like that, we might as well just pack it up. It’s over. Head on home.
-Not the best way to begin the year, but to be fair, we were playing a bonafide Stanley Cup contender. And then this coming Friday, we have to play the defending Eastern Conference champions. This is gonna suck until Saturday when we play the Blues.
