Description
I generally am not including guys who are rookies as much as guys who have played in the NHL at least the required amount to lose their rookie status. Also, this is just a list of ones that I thought of, there are certainly more than one on each team you could argue for. Players that already had good years last year (guys like Boldy, Jarvis for example) I tended to shy away from because they already broke into the NHL, now they are building off of it.

Some quick hits on guys: I know Liljegren is injured now, but it seems minor. Could have gone with Sandin too, should he return there. I went with Laf for the Rangers, but K'Andre Miller would be a good one too. I guess to me he already has been a steady defenseman, whereas Laf I see starting to show that #1 pick potential. I think you could maybe argue Howden over Whitecloud, but I think the depleted VGK blue line will let Whitecloud shine more. I really like McMichael, Fehervary would be good pick too. Perfetti was my pick for WPG but could see an argument for Barron, Sandberg as welll. Some teams were harder than others. For Pittsburgh, I still counted PO Joseph as a rookie because of games played, but he isn't waiver exempt anymore. That would be my pick if he is guaranteed a spot because of that. Blueger is good too. I like Pinto and Kelly in Ottawa too but Joseph had a good year and was healthier. I already discussed guys like Boldy and Jarvis (to me they are already broken out), in CBJ you could certainly argue Sillinger too or even Boqvist. Flyers maybe Frost or Tippett but York is much more likely to shine through I think. I love Trenin, but could definitely argue Tolvanen or Tomasino.

Let me know your thoughts!

I'm not really sure who to honest. To me Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, Mercer, Sharangovich all broke out already. I didn't include rookies here as I think that's a crapshoot. Maybe McLeod but he's a year older and Boqvist has been slowly going up.

You picked Coghlan when Kotkaniemi exists? Or Jarvis exists? Or Necas exists? Or Bear exists? Bold, I like it.

I explained Jarvis in detail in the description. To me, he IS broken out. Same with Necas. No one really is questioning if they can hang in the NHL full time right now, for them its about moving up the line up now. Bear has been a full time NHLer for years now, and I doubt he's gonna rack up points or get crazy minutes on that stacked blue line. Coghlan got shafted in the VGK depth plan, I think he will jump in with injuries similar to how Jarvis did last year and become pretty damn good. Also, KK I don't know. I kinda think he is what he is, but that's one you could pick instead.

Love the Lindblom pick, I agree personally. But I’d say sleepers on SJS are Labanc and Eklund (although some may argue it was foreseeable if he performs, I just hope he gains some confidence and trust from Quinn - I believe the kids going to be a star). Maybe Merkley but I don’t want to get my hopes up (but Merkley is almost equal to Eklund in superstar potential).

I’d say Whitecloud has already broken out, the guys desirable. Similar to Middleton, he may not be shiny but his value is respected. I’d go with Thompson if you’d accept he hasn’t broke out yet.

Joseph (OTT) is another great pick - I think most Sens fans over value Pinto but the guy is going to be a stud if he can stay healthy. Pinto would be more “breakout” whereas MJ would prolly just come into his own like Goodrow/Coleman in TB.

The Pens is going to be Ty Smith. By far and away I think that was the most underrated pick up.

I could see Stu, McLeod or Bouchard as the big ones for EDM

or if JP finds consistency he could rack up 20-25 goals

big Trenin fan-- but if Tomasino gets that 2RW spot on a line with Nino and Johansen, then I think he's got the inside track to have a breakout season.

Kotkaniemi is 21 years old. He was rushed into the NHL and fed to the wolves with his development. Kid is going to be playing with genuinely good wingers for the first time in his career. Dude is a prime breakout candidate.

Coghlan is the 8th D man at this point, and the 5th choice RD. He's probably behind Chatfield, because Chatfield is a better two-way guy, he's bigger, has more NHL experience, blah blah blah. I just think Coghlan is a LOT more of a bold pick than a 21 year old center that is going to be playing between Necas and one of Teuvo Teravainen and Andrei Svechnikov.

Idk, that's what people said about him last season and....yeah. Also, I remember Canes fans saying they wouldn't trade for a guy like Burns because of having Chatfield....so....

What? I think you're miss remembering. Burns didn't make sense because of having DeAngelo. After moving DeAngelo, Burns made sense. Had nothing to do with Chatfield. Chatfield is 2 years older, and a lot better, than Dylan Coghlan. Coghlan played really well tonight, but he's still D man number 8

Plus, there was never any plan for him to be a center last year. If you heard that, you were being lied to. Aho - Trocheck - Staal was set in stone, he played the first quarter of the year as a winger. After he moved off the wing, his PPG rate was better than Nate MacKinnon and Auston Matthews playing 4th line minutes. Yes, that's going to go down, but not by much. Kid is entering his age 22 season. Coghlan is 24. If Kotkaniemi is what he is, Coghlan is certainly what he is at this point. Everything you've tried to argue has been flawed. There's no justification for it to be Coghlan. Bear would have been a better pick if you wanted to go down that route. Coghlan makes no sense imo. He's D man number 7/8 right now

MN had everyone breakout last year. So it is limited choices. I have a hard time thinking about a backup goalie as a breakout player.

Mostly that he is young, Fleury will retire in two years, they could use a good heir apparent
