I think that's a pretty big overpay for a 3rd pair defender who has very little puck skills

Mayfield has played 18-20 mins a game for the past 4 years on a team with a good D Corp. He is a number 4 dman and not a 3rd pair dman. He is a good defensive dman and the Leafs could benefit from that.

Leafs also get the cap relief from this trade also.

Is he though? Or is he outside of Trotz's system? He's not fleet of foot nor is he overly skilled. He's big and hits a lot but in a possession system does that really work?

Paired with Rielly it’s perfection. Keep it simple, play your position and don’t pinch. He’d fit in perfectly

That's basically why they paired Lyubuskin with him for a bit last year. I was really hoping they could resign Lyubuskin. And the Leafs are still trying to get a Lyubuskin replacement. (Brodie is clearly better than Lyu but it made it so Brodie really strengthened the 2nd dpair).

Leafs have 4 extremly good dpairs in this AGM. Maybe it's over kill but injuries happen. They also have Mete and Benn as a 5th pair.

That's not how Keefe's system works though. Everyone is asked to hold onto the puck, be smart. Never needlessly give it up. That's not his game at all.

Lybushkin really wasn't that good though. He made a lot of blunders. But did hit a lot

Every player makes a lot of mistakes. He wasn't any worse than some very good dmen. He was defensive, cleared the net, physical, was in position and provided a lot of safety on defense. He wasn't perfect but he did very well. The Leafs don't need any more super stars. They need complimentary pieces like a Lyubuskin. I see Mayfield being a better version of Lyubuskin. He would be a great add.

As for why New York does this trade... well they need offensive help and would still have a very good top 4 defence without Mayfield. Kerfoot would help out their forward group for sure. Why New York potentially wouldn't do this is because they really need star power on forward and have been trying to achieve that and have failed all summer. Kerfoot would be the "well we tried at least this helps out a little right?" option.

I am not saying this is the worst idea but really Kerfoot for Mayfield is a fine enough deal but itself. Mayfield was scored on a pile last year when he was asked to play higher up due to injuries. Half way through the year he had been on the ice for half the teams total goals against. He isn't what people on here think
