Description
Two guys I’ve wanted for a while

Knight would make a lot of sense for NJ as good young goalie, grew up close to area, is close with Hughes. He is an RFA next Summer and is represented by same agent as Demko, who signed $5m x 5 years after 59 NHL starts. With Bobrovsky locked in for four more years, that may be too steep a price for FLA. Currently, they are above the cap, have no top prospects or 1st round picks, and big holes to fill in defense. This trade helps a little with each issue. It gives them a top-4 dman, adds a couple prospects, adds picks, and gives them some cap flexibility. Last time, I tried with Mercer and Florida fans said they didn’t need the forward.

Petersson was a deal I had liked a while ago before we obtained Siegenthaler. Pens blueline shuffle may be done, I’m not sure.

Bro. I like Luke Hughes as a player. I think he will be ready in a year.

If I’m wrong tho, the Devils still have Siegenthaler, they r probably going to resign Graves, and Kevin Bahl won’t be waiver exempt next season. That’s three NHL lefty d men right there. That’s just a fact bro. I don’t c what I did wrong here by pointing that out.

I'm glad you like Hughes. I also think highly of him, but he's 19. You being positive he's a shoe-in to play this year is just foolish. I'm not saying foolish to troll you, but acting like knowing something you can't possibly know is foolish. Sure, now you're saying you THINK he'll be ready, but teams are not always in the business waiting to see. Teams like to sometimes cover their bases. NJ is finally making moves that show they plan on competing, so while they're likely in no immediate rush, the playoffs are in their sites.

Picking up Pettersson or any proven LHD for that matter is something to consider if they'd like to cover their bases.

I'm also aware this deal is not going to happen, but it may based on how things pan out in the first month, they may consider bringing in another dman.

@Mr_Gardoki @isles5513 appreciate the debate here, but Graves was moved to Florida in Knight deal. Pettersson would be his replacement, so wouldn’t block Hughes.

Well I suggested someone with less term originally lol. That being said my take on Hughes is based off Makar and Byram who compare well to him.

Just awful, really. Such a genius move for a team to trade a potential future elite #1 for some scraps.

Florida has no picks, no prospects, no cap space…and a blueline that includes Staal and Del Zotto.

Are there better alternatives to improve team?

I just think you're missing my point. Hughes may wind up being the be the best dman in the NHL and personally, I think he's going to be very good.

My point is simply that he may not be ready at 19 years old and may need a little more development. Hell, Letang was sent back to the Q for more development even though he showed potential from the get-go.

Hughes is very young still (late birthday for that draft class). But his ‘return for more seasoning’ is this year. Last year, he was the first freshman defenseman to be a Hobey Baker finalist in 35 years (since Brian Leetch 1987). And he did it as 3rd youngest player in all of NCAA. (Keep in mind, college rosters are about 4 years older than junior rosters). He also showed he could hang with pros at World Championship. He probably signs in April 2023, goes straight into NHL and never turns back.

??? In 2023 off-season
Don't need to mortgage the future for an ok top 4 guy this year when we're better off going all in next season after the cap crunch is over

Cap is going up $1 million next year. And likely $1 million year after that. Bill Daly has has said no big jump expected until after escrow is balanced...so after 2024-25 season. He said no more than $1 million increases until 2025-26.

How does this relate to the fact that Panthers are getting significantly over 10 million in cap space due to expiring contracts/buyouts next year?
