Soooooo why is our goaltending “questionable”?! They were by far our best assets last season. I just don’t get it honestly.

For me I think its a fair gamble. Jarry is great but what i am concerned about is his playoff ability. Desmith was great. I like them both but the only reason ive called it questionable is that i think the team theyve put together this year is very capable of another cup. the goaltending is just the weakest area in my opinion and if they have to play an offensive powerhouse like Colorado or Edmonton, are they going to be the two guys who can get in done for them. Will they be willing to bet on them getting it done or will they add to have more confidence.

I think Jarry has found a lot of confidence in his game last season. There’s literally no issue to be concerned about with both him and DeSmith. And if we’re talking playoffs, goaltending was still far from the problem. DeSmith was great, Domingue was great, Jarry was great as he could be considering the circumstances of being injured. The issue was injury to key player.

Jarry is starter caliber, and while DeSmith is a backup, they are both lower on the totem pole for their respective roster spots compared to other teams. I would argue the Pens have “average” goaltending. They don’t have a world beater starter, and their backup can take the starter role in a pinch, but it’s questionable whether or not DeSmith can run with the starter role. I also think a lot of their success has to do with the team in front of them as well. A lot of times you can overlook a goalies fatal flaws if they play behind a good team. For example, Grubauer has a few flaws, but looked stellar in the Avs system. Nedeljkovic only looked great in Charlotte and in Carolina because he played behind a stacked dcore that eliminated most of the shots he would have faced. Same goes for a below average goalie in Mrazek. He had brief stretches of good showings in PHI, DET, and even in TOR. But his best performances were in Carolina where he had a much easier workload because of the team in front of him.

That being said, for Jarry and DeSmith, their big tests will be the next couple of years, where Crosby, Malkin, and Letang use what little they have remaining in their primes to try to continue contending. Jarry and DeSmith will have to work harder to counteract the inevitable drop in production from the Pens aging core.

Their only issue is health come playoff time. If they were healthy last year, pens probably crush the rangers in 5. If they can stay healthy they should get at least one more cup run with Jarry and Desmith

The average part doesn’t make sense though. Jarry was top 10 in wins, save percentage, GAA, Shutouts. Probably doesn’t mean much but he was also had a vote for Vezina last season. DeSmith I’d have to imagine plays better all round next season after the run he was on for the last months and the playoffs. And in. Add you never noticed
Tristan Jarry stats
58 games played
Record 34-18-6
919 SV% 2.42GAA
Casey DeSmith stats
26 games played
Record 11-6-5
914 SV% 2.79GAA(that one isn’t as good)
Louis Domingue stats
2 games played
Record 1-1
952 SV% 2.02GAA

Mind telling me why those stats are average?

People have been saying our netminding is questionable? That's nuts. Jarry finished among the best last season. The only thing is health with our goalies. If they stay healthy, were good.

I meant average as a tandem. As a tandem, they are closer to middle of the pack. But that’s just my opinion. It’s not like I watch every Pens game.

I think Sully needs to have more faith in DeSmith. Feels like he was barely being played for the first half of the season compared to the second half.

I think the reason is because of the playoffs the last two years. Jarry obviously sucked in the Islanders series and Domingue was subpar in the Rangers series - but what do you expect from your 3rd string goalie. I don't agree with it - the goalie tandem is actually really good based on numbers. I just think that is the reason people view it as a weakness.

Just to put some perspective on this;

There were 79 goalies last year who played 300+ plus minutes(5 games) - Jarry was 8th in SV% and Desmith was 20th. Only 2 other teams had a tandem in the top 20.
