What I Would Do If I Was GM

Description
All of these trades had been made to open up cap space, which I successfully did.

Kerfoot being traded to Carolina opens up new possibilities for both teams. The Maple Leafs get a better goal scorer, a more physical player who had 109 hits last year compared to Kerfoots 75. Fast is also a cheaper option than Kerfoot as well. On the Hurricanes side, they get a play who is younger by two years, and had 17 more points than Fast. Kerfoot also has the ability to play on the penalty kill which will greatly benefit him and the Hurricanes.

Next up is the Justin Holl trade. I think Holl getting traded is a great possibility. I can see a team like the Wild really wanting Holl. Justin is from Minnesota so it works out perfectly for him. The Maple Leafs on the other hand acquire cap space and get a third round pick which is good value for Holl

Lastly the Jake Muzzin trade. I feel as though this one is the biggest trade out of the three. Muzzin gets traded back to his former team, and the Maple Leafs get rid of that 5 million dollar contract. The Leafs probably do get worse defensively, but this opens up the opportunity for Rasmus Sandin to step up into that 2nd Left D-man role. This trade is quite similar to the Ryan Mcdonagh trade to Nashville. Basically a cap dump. The Kings get a good D-man that solidifies their defence core, while the Maple Leafs get way more cap space to re sign or sign new players next off-season and get younger with the new additions. I like the two players in Matt Roy and Gabe Vilardi. Roy fits perfectly on that second defence pairing with Sandin, Roy is an excellent replacement as he is much younger, on a team friendly deal and had around 20 more hits than Muzzin last season so the Leafs do not lose that physical factor. Gabe Vilardi was an interesting player to look at, he was in desperate need of a fresh start. Vilardi is from Kingston so he is familiar with the Toronto area, and is welcomed home. I think he fits greatly on that fourth line center role that adds more size to the Leafs bottom six, as he is 6 foot 3 and 205 pounds.

Let me know what you all think in the comments on this one.

You would make trades that strictly favor your team and don't address anything for the other?

As the GM for the Leafs, you will convince the Kings that Muzzin (has a full NMC for this season) who had an awful season, concussion history, and hasn't played up to his contract, to not only trade their best shut down RD who played top pair minutes last season and a recent first round pick.

And you believe that by moving Muzzin and getting Roy, the Leafs defense actually gets worse.

Bud, take a break, this is some awful trading and I don't think you know how bad Muzzin was last season nor how good Roy is.

if I were a GM, I'd give away all of my bad and overpaid players in exchange for better players on team-friendly contracts for a fraction of their value too.

Why is that though? a 50 point player that can line up at center, penalty kill, play second unit powerplay, and will only cost $775k out of pocket.

Well what do you think then would be a good trade for the Kings? If I were Kyle Dubas I would still want Gabe Vilardi. Maybe add Sean Walker idk. Is he healthy this season thats the only issue.

If Muzzin were to waive he'd likely waive to a playoff team with cap space, which ever team that is has all the bargaining power. If that team was the Kings our offer wouldn't be much.

Edler outpreformed him last season stats wise and signed to the league minimum for us, the Kings would give up Walker for Muzzin with 50% retention. We wouldn't take Muzzin off waivers at his full contract, and I believe that is the feeling for most playoff hopeful teams.

The ONLY option to get Muzzin to LA is to retain half on Muzzin and take back Sean Walker.

There are no other additions to either side, no picks, no Vilardi, no nothing.

The Kings don't want or need Muzzin.

Wild moved Kulikov for FC in order to clear some cap and pave the way for Addison. They're not gonna turn around and throw a 3rd for Holl to create those same issues. Not a fit.

Carolina doesn't have the cap when patches gets back and do not really need to overpay for Kerfoot.
LA Muzzin doesn't waive NMC and they certainly aren't taking on cap and giving up the better assets. Muzzin and a first doesn't get you Roy.

Wild have no need for Holl and need to keep picks.
Everyone knows Toronto needs cap space so, everyone takes it for them, and pays above market value to do so? Are Blake,Guerin and Waddell secretly trying to improve Toronto from the outside?

And the only reason he even put those 50 points on the board was because he was playing on a line with Tavares and Nylander. I guarantee you, he doesn’t get anywhere close to that amount if he plays on the 3rd line where he belongs.

Whereas while Fast can’t play C and doesn’t get PP time, he is a locker room favorite and absolutely adored by everyone in management and the Canes fanbase, so there is no reason to move him. Not to mention, he compliments Staal extremely well, and will stay with Staal and very likely Stastny, for the entire year. Teams don’t trade glue guys like Fast, which is the only reason why Martinook is still in Carolina.

LA doesn't want Muzzin for free at his full cap hit. Why would they add Vilardi?

I think Walker's health is less questionable than Muzzin's.

Let me see if I have this detail correct. If Toronto acquires Fast and Fast scores more than 20 goals then Toronto gets a better pick? Really? While I'm not trashing the trade value in a vacuum here, although there is too much trade pick head fake going on, I think the Canes are comfortable with Fast in his current role and are not likely to shake that up.

He’s not a 50pt player on CAR and carries a cap hit of $1M more than Fast. Plus you want picks.

Very easy pass.

Muzzin is an aging veteran with a huge cap hit. Roy is better, younger and cheaper. Moreover, Muzzin's cap hit exceeds the sum of Roy's and Vilardi's by more than our available cap space, and we're losing a roster slot. Finally, the idea that we need a LD is highly overblown -- we have 4 under contract on the main roster now and Sean Walker can play there, too. In theory, we could trade you Sean Walker for Jake Muzzin with 50% retention, but we don't really have the need to do even that. Our roster is set for the season unless some young, first-class LhD with at least three years' term suddenly comes available, and Muzzin is none of that.

Welcome to CapFriendly, by the way.
