One GM already over paid for Risto, then resigned him to a contract, don't think any other GM will over pay for him again.

Why is this an overpayment?

Risto can't play in his own end. He is basically a Chairot who puts up about 5-10 more points a year.

Well... He's been on some bad teams. I think of him a lot like Josh Anderson. He has qualities you see when you watch him, but the numbers on paper are not there.

Honestly if I made the same offer for Josh Anderson most Habs fans would say it's an underpayment. What do you think. Would this be a fair offer for Anderson?

He definitely falls into that same territory as Anderson. IV always been of the thought that you get this type of package for Anderson, maybe a youngerish roster player then what's above, you take it

I think Risto instantly becomes the best RHD on the Habs. Play him with Edmundson. Eddy can cover up his defensive liabilities. But Risto is not bad at defense, he's just been asked to do too much in Buffalo for many years. He had a decent year defensively last year.

He is better than Savard (more offense)
He is better than Wideman (more defense)
He is better than Barron (more experience and more upside)
He is better than Harris (Natural RHD over LHRD, better power play QB)

He can give the Habs a chance to bring Barron along slower and not play Harris on the right.

He's essentially Matheson on the right side.

Edmundson Ristolainen
Matheson Savard
Harris/Guhle Wideman/Barron (with the kids jumping up and down between Laval)
Schueneman (7th D)

Buffalo does not value veteran defensemen and as a result they have hurt their prospects year after year. Risto, like Dahlin, is an example of giving a guy too much responsibility too soon.

But why... Locking into a contract for a player entering his prime is not a bad thing. Matheson for example is not a problem.

The Habs are going to have to have veterans at all positions. You cannot just run the kids. It's a really bad development model and rarely works out. Plus the Habs have very few RHD prospects. I'd take Risto over Harris playing on this offside. I'd take Risto over Mailloux getting a contract when he has proved nothing.

Risto has gone to the school of hard knocks and has cleaned up his act.

Appreciate your perspective. I don't think Risto is an Anchor. I think he's the perfect fit for the Habs and the only issue with this deal is that the Habs will win more if they make this deal so they make their 1st less valuable.

They even breakdown the microstats in the following tweet and he doesnt do anything of value that isnt being reflected in the larger numbers.

All he has going for him is being tall and right handed he is a replacement level nhler who we saw at this point doesnt even put up points ts anymore

Yes, Risto over both Harris and Mailloux. That doesn't mean we need to go get him. We're still forming what this team is to really look like so to lock into another term deal for a guy that might not end up fitting in doesn't make sense to me.

Here is my perspective, take it however you feel.

Risto is the Jonathan Drouin of Defense, would you expect a team to give us a similar package for Drouin without retention? Risto is a good middle pair RD and yes he would by default be our best RD but that doesn't mean he is the best fit. Subban plays a similar style and doesn't cost assets, Stralman also costs nothing and plays better both ways. Sure both are older but both would also only be looking for short term deals as well thus allowing our young guys to get playing time.

Yknow that’s actually pretty close to the actually value it’d require to pry risto out of Philly. Just swap Harris and the first going to Philly with Hoffman and add Philly’s unprotected first going to Montreal.

Maybe IF Drouin had played in the past 2 seasons and had not injured both of his wrists making it impossible for him to shoot the puck.

Risto and Drouin are not very similar in my opinion. A better comparison would be Petry when we got him from Edmonton for a 2nd. The difference being that Risto has been bringing the offense since entering the league and Petry only really started once he came over to the Habs.

Good point. The Habs will ultimately be better off sucking for 2 more seasons and continuing to draft well. I am not unaware.

The thing is I believe in our veteran core more than other Habs fans. I think this is the year Dvorak, Edmundson, Anderson, Gallagher show that they are not the overpaid 3rd liners other fans label them. I do think they need a balanced D group to get there.

I also believe 3 late 1st round picks can sometimes be better than 1 top 10 pick. When you draft Mesar & Beck with them over Galchenyuk & Kotkaniemi.

Is john514 really a habs fan ? I've seen him too many time here come up with horrible trade ideas for MTL where they always massively overpay mediocre players (with horrible contracts sometimes)

Hughes didn't trade petry for Matheson only to go on and trade for another RHD with a massive contract with futures and overyoay by a lot, it would've been perry for him 1 for 1 if the habs were interested
