I mean, Lundkvist hasn’t done anything to be worth a 1st. Not to mention, he refused to go to training camp and demanded a trade just because he didn’t have a roster spot. So if a disgruntled and unproven Lundkvist is worth a first, how much does that drive up Bear’s value?

As funny as this is, Lundkvist is far younger and is from a much purer pedigree than Bear. Although I do think this says a lot about how difficult it is to trade right now

I don't think we could get a 1st from anyone personally. That was a mix of Lundkvist being younger and Dallas just straight up getting fleeced. I think, barring some more Waddell magic, the most we can get is around a 2nd, and i'd be pretty happy with that.

Neither have done much of note at the NHL level, yet they both got a 1st in return. Bear, whilst about 3 years older, is also more proven. Before the Lundkvist trade, I have said a second or third for Bear. But looking at both the Romanov and Lundkvist trades as comparables, what reason should Bear not get a 1st in return?

Proven that he is worse. Bear was healthy scratched at points last year at 25 he is not in the same ballpark value wise to Romanov .

Bear is older and has struggled with consistency at times. You know what you’re getting with him, which is less than the potential ceilings on Nils and Romanov. Stars likely paid a premium for Nils being dirt cheap for two years in a flat cap world

Agreed, I love the trade for NYR but Dallas took a win now gamble that could pay off really well.

And to answer the original post? A high 3rd, very late 2nd at most

Any time you can walk away with a first for a disgruntled prospect it’s a job well done. My initial response to the trade was that we paid too much, but if you look at the Romanov trade and the fact that Nils is on his ELC for two more years it’s closer to reasonable. I love the add. Takes some offensive pressure off Harley. Bridges the gap between our current players and the dmen we just drafted. Looks bad if he’s Honka 2.0, but I feel like he’s a better player and will have better coaching and better opportunities. Here’s to hoping it’s a win win trade. Looks good for the Rangers either way

You all are missing the most important difference here. Nils is still on his elc, but Bear has a 2.2 mil cap hit. That is why I highly highly doubt Bear would get a first.

Not comparable. Bear is 25 and struggling. Lundkvist is 21 with room to grow. He is also on an ELC whereas Bear costs 2.2 mil.

Lundkvist is 21 and NHL caliber on an ELC, Bear is 25 making over $2M. It's not a fair comparison. Bear has more cap, less RFA years, and a lower ceiling. Lundkvist has so much more room to grow.

Hell I'd take a 3rd or 4th for him and just move on. The cap space is worth it at this point just to move on, and I personally think there are several options that are just as good and cost 1/3rd as much.

Lol not comparable whatsoever. Lundkvist and Romanov are comparables. Bear and Lundkvist are not. Bear is more proven you are right. He is proven to be a good depth option in the botton 4 defense. Romanov and Lundkvist were traded for first because GMs likely see them as top pairing potential. Bear is not that.
