Barrie >>>>> Drouin

Edmonton declines.

I disagree that it's that large of a gap, but to each their own. Barrie is certainly better as an asset than Drouin but the cap space that helps them retain Puljujarvi and the replacement of Barrie with a lower-variance Dmanto tutor Broberg in Stralman is the real value in that trade. And this is from someone who believes the criticisms of Barrie are vastly overstated.

And that's without factoring in the savings for next year.

We'll take Barrie, you can send Lavoie and the 3rd to another team to retain cause the Habs can't retain in this proposal. We just don't have the available cap space.

Teams that are looking to be highly competitive dont tend to create a hole in line up right before camp. This doesn't save enough money to resign mcloed and replace Barrie so it's still forcing another trade. Doesn't make sense for Edmonton.

So you're suggesting 1.175mil and 1mil aren't enough to McLeod and Stralman respectively? Because otherwise, I've demonstrated exactly what you say the move doesn't do.

Look at the past few years for Drouin. He's been injured more often than not, and underwhelming when he has been in the lineup. This move saves just $750k, it's just not worth the downgrade for a guy who likely doesn't make the Oilers top-9.

4.5mil - 2.75mil is 1.75mil which, given they run a 22-man roster to save the extra cap from Shore going down, is enough to sign McCleod and a RD replacement. Re: Drouin, sure he's no guarantee but he's dealt with some personal difficulties the past couple years. Maybe a move is precisely what he needs to get things back on track. Maybe it doesn't, but the main value is keeping Puljujarvi while not downgrading too much at D along with the cap savings next year.

Yeah, it still doesn't make sense for Montreal. Barrie is fine for who he is, but apart from being a veteran that can shelter young guys, he just straight up doesn't bring anything Montreal needs for where they are. And there are still cheaper UFA options out there that can do that. Even if they get nothing for Drouin at the deadline, the cap space next offseason probably serves them better than anything else.

Getting something for Drouin isn't the issue, but in this proposal we move out one of our wingers for a RD. That is the positional swap we need and whether there are cheaper options or not this is a good return imo. Not every move needs to be cutthroat, sometimes we just need to make a move and if it turns out we did someone a favour then in the future possibly that favour gets returned.

Regardless, we need to swap a winger for a RD and this proposal does just that. Barrie might not be the ideal RD but he's pretty damn good and would fill the "veteran RD" that Hughes is looking for to eat top 4 minutes. I just don't see the downside to this deal as long as someone else takes the retention.

There are cap considerations you're ignoring. Even if you assume Edmonton would find another team doing the retaining, the difference between trading Drouin at 50% for nothing vs. Drouin at 50% for Barrie is Price being on offseason LTIR vs. in-season LTIR, which is rather significant for Montreal's cap planning. Its why clearing a forward with that cap is Hughe's priority right now, not a veteran D-man.

I'd also argue that Barrie isn't "pretty damn good" and he pretty clearly doesn't eat top-4 minutes, but that doesn't really matter for the deal for Montreal. The fact is, it doesn't make sense for Montreal either this season or next.

I'm not ignoring the cap implications, currently we'll have ~$10 million come off the books for next season. Price LTIR gymnastics will be a constant game unless we can move his contract. We're within cap compliance right now with Price going on LTIR in season. Both clearing a forward and adding a vet RD are of his utmost priorities right now. We currently have ~$2-300,000 cap space with the available moves in house. Moving Drouin for Barrie would reduce the amount coming off next season by 4.5 million. Still leaves us with > $6 million in available cap space without making any additional moves outside of Drouin/Barrie.

Savard/Barron/Wideman is disgusting as a RD lineup and adding a guy like Barrie would work well with this lineup, especially since he's more of a PP specialist but still plays D. Regardless of his lack of defensive skills he's still a vet RD who would be eating up top 4 minutes on this roster. Not to mention it's not a long term solution but would still get us through at least one season (if we decide to move him next year) or for at least 2 seasons (if we let his contract run its course).

We need a RD desperately more than we need way too many wingers. If EDM is willing to give us a guy like Barrie for a guy like Drouin, I'm taking that deal 10/10 times with the current needs of this roster. Neither Drouin or Barrie have a future with MTL, it's all about filling the needs we have without it costing too much or signing yet another roster player. We gotta move some of these contracts out to fix our holes and this is a very good option for us (not like we're trying to contend anyway, just need to ice a team that people will pay to watch while they lose every game)

To me, it makes more sense than holding onto Drouin in the hopes he brings us a 2nd rounder? Fix an issue now, we have plenty of contracts to trade with later anyway.

You're not getting the cap calculations of offseason vs inseason LTIR. And I don't think you're paying attention to the D Montreal has or what they actually need. They don't need a PP D-man. Barrie isn't going to provide much more there than a Wideman or a Matheson if he doesn't have actually good weapons. Unless there's a stylistic fit, he's not going to be as effective as playing set up for two top5/10 forwards in the NHL. And he's already more of a 4-6 D-man at 5v5.

Its just much easier for Montreal to pursue a Subban/Stralman UFA. Should be far cheaper, does the same "eating of minutes", but doesn't require the cap space now and next season. trading Drouin at 50% for literally nothing right now and signing a Stralman for a 1mil or less for the season lets Montreal play cap gymnastics to have Price's contract on in-season LTIR, get the veteran who can eat top-4 minutes to protect the prospects AND keeps their cap space for next season. The only downside is getting less offense from their D, which doesn't really matter for them this season anyways.

Tell that to your GM.
“If we can find, and we believe that there will be, either via trade or the waiver process, right-shot D that become available to us, then we’re going to continue to study that,” said Kent Hughes in his desire to add another right-shot defenceman before the start of the season. “In the interim, we feel like, even if we have an injury, we do have the capacity to put one of our guys on that right side.”

He may not be perfect, but he holds more value to your team as constructed than Drouin. You may not like the trade, but it addresses or helps address MTL's needs in the following ways:

a.) eases the forward logjam
b.) adds a veteran RD
c.) adds more futures to the team
d.) does the above without sacrificing anything during its competitive window (~2 years from now)

If trades are only required to meet the needs of one team, then sure. Unfortunately for you, that fantasy world isn't reality and, as such, a trade also has to meet the needs of the opposing team. As has been made clear to you, Hoffman fills zero needs for EDM and actually makes them objectively worse. It'd be wise for you to start by articulating what EDM's needs are and then build from there.
