I don’t think LA can do this deal because we would either have to place Anderson on waivers or Vilardi/Lias Anderson/Moverare to make it work

Sandin wont sit. If he does not sign before the season starts he won't play the whole year. Once the season starts his cap hit increases everyday.

I agree Kerfoot is gone, but once he's traded he'll traded for a prospect that's 1-2 yrs away from the NHL.

I mean I dont think they would mind waiving Lias Anderson

As Joey fits the 4th line mold of what they want and isnt just a shootout specialist

No reason for the Leafs to trade Anderson just yet though.

There’s a decent chance the flames waive Valimaki lol. He’s not going to be a regular on the flames this year. I think they’d be fine giving him up.

This is a bit of a misconception. His cap hit changes due to the missed time. But that inflated cap hit is charged only for the days that remain.

Meaning if he were signed for 1.5m the leafs would have that divided among the remaining time as his daily.

Bingo! Not unless Kerfoot's retained at least 43% or $1.5mil+. Alternatively CGY'll accept a 2nd RD Pick

Maybe, but I bet CGY pulls off a Trade or tries slipping Mackey through Waivers first before letting Valimaki walk for nothing. We're happy to let him go, but not for Kerfoot at his full Cap Hit. Maybe TOR pays a 2nd Team to retain 50% and then I could see it happening

Silly thought. Flames should take this trade. It will be the best return you will see on valimaki.

I actually think this trade works well both ways. It's not going to happen but it's smart and well thought out.

Completing this Trade as it is Posted would eat up all the remaining Cap Space CGY has and would force us to play a 21 Man Roster. Not interested. We still have Ruzicka to re-sign and like to play with a full roster

It is a decent idea and I am interested in Kerfoot, but I believe Valimaki could still be worth as much as a late 2nd or early 3rd Round Pick and at his Full Cap Hit Kerfoot isn't. I know TOR won't retain, but if they paid a 4th or 5th Round Pick to have a 3rd Team retain $1.5-1.75mil of Kerfoot's Cap Hit so they could acquire Valimaki, that'd be a fair deal in my mind. The thing is Kerfoot would be a nice to have, not need to have. A Top-6 C or RW is a Bigger need, especially one with a Right Shot

There's nothing forcing CGY to Waive Valimaki either. CGY could simply Scratch 2 or 3 D-Men instead of a Forward and simply keep him on the Roster and around to practice with the Team, maybe trying him out at RD if Tanev still isn't 100%

Valimaki is not getting any of that. He will get you a struggling prospect. Not many teams would be interested in a 1.6m 7d. The trade would hinge on whether Pelletier is nhl ready. Kerfoot would eat up his spot.

Fair enough, I get the fact that you guys can’t really afford to make this trade (you can, but it would mean you would have to run a 21 man roster), so I’m sure extra retention should be arranged. Though I feel like Calgary should be the team paying it. Kerfoot is the better player by quite a bit.

Let's just wait and see till Training Camp is over k. Lots can change between now and then and unfortunately injuries and such happen, which will only increase the need for and value of a "7th D-Man"

Sure, but he's a Rental. What's the Value of a Big Young RFA Defenseman who still has Top-4 Potential!?

Tell you what, If TOR can find a 3rd Team to retain 50% and pays the 4th or 5th it should cost, CGY will pitch in a 6th or 7th Round Pick to help replace it k

I'm a flames fan too, valimaki has top 6 potential. And even that is growing thin. He is not an nhl skater. Valimaki will not get a QO from Calgary or Toronto. The only way he gets extended is with a pay cut. I would say kerfoot has a better possibility of getting re signed.

Sounds like you've pretty much given up on Valimaki completely, which is fine, but I'm just done with him as a Flame. I still think he has a lot to offer, just timing & circumstances made it so he didn't make the Flames roster this season and the screwing around for his first 9 games let Mackey swoop in and take the Top D Position & Ice Time and to his credit, didn't let it go, so Maki's stats are down and value is obviously hurt now as a result

Could have been Valimaki who had the Breakout Season Playing with Tanev, but no, he got stuck paired with Guds & Zadorov, which isn't the same opportunity in my mind. Anyways, all good, I'm getting blue in the face wink @MoxNix

I gave up on him a long time ago when his skating didn't improve. He has neither agility or speed. I wasn't setting the bar too high either. Just nhl worthy. The rest of his issues with judgement can be fixed.

But on the Flames he is. With one of Meloche, Gilbert, Mackey, Valimaki, or the currently unsigned but long-time Flames seventh defenceman Michael Stone, likely taking the spot. It doesn’t make sense to keep Valimaki in this role unless they think he will get regular minutes.

This past season, Valimaki struggled to earn meaningful minutes in the NHL. He only featured in nine games for the Flames, he played mostly in a third pairing role with Ilya Solovyov in his time with the Heat.

The closest comparable trade that has happened is likely the Olli Juolevi trade in 2021 which sent the 2016 first-round pick to Florida for Noah Juulsen and Juho Lammikko. Do not expect the return for Valimaki to be much at all if the Flames do end up trading him.

He is most likely waived and picked up on waivers.

I will agree getting a 3rd team to retain on Kerfoot would help this trade, give CGY more cap flexibility. But there are going to be a lot of teams running a 21 man roster this year. It will certainly help have CGY farm team close by from now on
