The likely hood if Matthews to Los Angeles might be unrealistic and not the direction Toronto is looking towards, however what would a realistic trade look like?

I would assume it would at least need to start with Byfield and Turcotte. What would be the additional pieces?

I’ll list a mock trade here below and Toronto/Los Angeles fans I’ll hear out your adjustments. Let’s put Cap Space aside and just focus on the trade.

Keep adding until you absolutely gut your team of young talent and futures to the point where it's just a waste of time to add matthews and then add another 1st.

You do realize if hes not extended before 2024 hes most likely getting traded and that team will probs extend him right?

As letting AM walk for nothing would not be a good look for any GM.

Meaning unless LA traded for him they would not get him. As what we learned from Calgary you dont let a big name walk unless you got a backup plan. So unless they were for sure bringing in McDavid that year they wouldnt let him walk

But in general hes probs signing a 16mill x 8 year deal by 2023 offseason

Matthews really isn't Gretzky, Lindros and Lemieux all combined into one, value wise.
Of course there is a hypothetic offer that the Leafs hypothetically would consider.

He's the best goal scorer in the league, a top 3 player in the league in hia prime, great defensively and on a team trying to win a cup.
You want him, you are gonna have to break the bank.
    So hypothetically ante up

It would need to be a huge package

    High End C Prospect (Byfield)
    High End D Prospect (Brandt)|
    Kempe for cap reasons
    Walker for cap reasons
    1st in 2023 (Unprotected)
    1st in 2024 (Unprotected)
1 or 2 more prospect (1 Turcotte or 2 of the following: Helge, Spence, Kapari)

Damn LA has a ton of good prospects. They have done a great job! To me their team looks very good. Biggest hole I see is a proven top pair left D. If one of their prospects turn into that OR they trade for one, this team will be dangerous. They should already be very good.

Matthews would clearly be the best player on this team... but at what cost. It seems like what Vegas did when aquiring Pietreangelo and Eichel. Both amazing pieces but it took away from what they already had going for them.

I don't see this as a fit - YET. Once Kopitar is done with his contract and extends to be a lesser role on the team, Matthews makes a ton of sense.

I should also mention that Leafs wouldn't trade Matthews at all (I think we all know this) At least at this point in time. - Just playing with the hypothetical situation.

Highly doubt any team trades for McDavid or Mathews just because of the cost. Teams will just wait to sign him.

leafs wouldnt move their franchise player for unproven prospects with very or no nhl experience paired with 2 frst rounders LA might be a good spot for him to sign if he hits FA, but as trade partners there is no real match

Trading for Mathews would be a mistake. Toronto isn't going to trade him at the deadline while they're trying to win a Cup, so worst case scenario, you trade for his signing rights in June 2024. It would certainly cost more than the signing rights for most players, but it's not going to cost Byfield+.

Otherwise just wait until he's a UFA and make him an offer.

Byfield, Turcotte, Durzi and your next 3 first rounders. Toronto still wouldn't do that trade. But that is not robably close to fair value. If you want them to pull the trigger you would need to add something crazy. I'm not sure LA has that piece.

I think the entire idea is based around Matthews staying in Toronto. Which is the most likely outcome.

My point was that Matthews is either going to re-sign in Toronto or walk at UFA. There's no situation where Toronto will trade him, because no one would be willing to give up the insane haul it would cost when he can just walk to UFA in 2024.

I don’t think the leafs would trade him for anything TBH. Probably just play out the year as Matthews single handedly turns this team into a (regular season at least) powerhouse and there’s just no way of replacing that.

The agm is for this year. You're right though. It would be a crippling haul. For a team with the right pieces it might be the right move. LA is close to that but they just lack that star prospect that's needed to add to my proposal. But teams won't go at the price. Players like Matthews aren't traded.

Now if he refuses to extend this offseason then you will see a trade. Take the Tkachuk trade and double it for a Matthews sign and trade. But I get the feeling he will re sign with the leafs. He likes the team, staff and city. The Tkachuk situation I called as soon as Tkachuk signed that bridge deal.

I don't think anyone will trade for a rental Matthews if that's the cost. If he's not willing to sign in Toronto, he likely already has another desired destination in mind (Arizona?), and if that's the case, why would any team, especially the team that he wants to play for give up a haul for him when they know they can sign him in UFA for nothing.

As we learned from the Jack Campbell signing, the no tampering rule is really only a suggestion.

Certainly won't be Arizona. I'm not sure where you are getting rental Matthews from. Why did Florida pay a haul for Tkachuk?

Rental is maybe not the right word. "Unextended."

Florida paid that haul because they were able to immediately sign Tkachuk to an extension. If Matthews is traded this season, he's not allowed to sign an extension until the following summer. A team won't take that risk.
