you know the salary cap exists for the Avs and they instantly decline that trade. Patrick kane is the last thing they need

They are one of teams that has inquired about him. I assume it would take double retention but Kaner to the Avs is not that crazy.

inquired is not trade talks. GMs inquire about players all the time, even ones they are not interested in trading for, its their job. They call other teams to know whos available, who will be on the market, what the costs will be so they can value gauge and understand the trade market

Brian Burke has said in an interview before is fans knew what GMs talk about when it comes to players it would make their head explode.

Avs dont need Kane and that is offer is underwhelming imo, other teams can beat it. Valimaki isnt that great but he marginally improves our team and we're giving up a pick which are both things we dont want to do. I'd do that Khudobin trade, Mrazek will most likely get hurt again.

Who on the Avs (or in the rest of the league) is in a similar situation to Kaner. Who's value would they be trying to gauge by calling about him? He is a unique player in a fairly unique situation, when teams call about him it is because there is at least some interest.

Its an arms race for contenders to win the cup, they are trying to figure out who is available that is of a major impact and what the costs of them will be. Its not rocket science. Know what the price would be to improve your team so you dont over spend on another trade.

Know what Kanes value is so if a team who is trying to sell of their rental is wanting more than Kane for example, you can use it as leverage to lessen the trade talks.

So you agree they are calling because they would be interested for the right price. Glad we could come this agreement.

thatis not at all I said, clearlyyou didnt comprehend the point of the whole thing

Its understanding what the prices are, not that they are interested in said player. This isnt that hard to follow along

I hope Colorado doesn't trade for Kane because their picks are awful and their prospect pool is dry (other then guys already on the roster) but to think they have no interest is dumb. I ask once again what player would a price on Kaner help you evaluate? What other top 10 winger on an expiring deal is on a team looking to get the #1 pick? His value is unique because his situation is unique. The avs went hard after Giroux last year(Who they would have played on the wing) who was in a similar situation not sure what they added this offseason to make you think they no longer want to add to their top 6.

They did not go hard after Giroux, sakic confirmed that himself. They never even made an offer on Giroux bc they knew he only wanted to play in Florida.
Sakic doesnt like pure rentals...thats why he would be more creative checking in on guys with term to understand their value...hence why they inquired on Kane.

You are way over thinking this

Yeah way over thinking, when a team calls about a player it probably means they have zero interest in trading for him. You are right.

One of the last things they need is a elite winger on retained expiring contract? I agree it's probably overkill but he would be dynamic in that lineup

If Dallas signs Robertson to a deal starting with a 7. they'll have to move salary and Khudobin is probably that guy, but they'll have to pay a bit more then a 3rd to get rid of it IMO

Kane's base salary is $2.9m so it would be super easy to get max retention. Also that's too many moving parts from Colorado.

Kane plays zero defense, the Avs have said they aren’t trading their 23 1st, and beside defense the last thing COL needs is a top 6 winger.

There’s calling about a player on a team that is obviously in sell mode and gauging what the price would be, that’s called due diligence and what a GM should be doing, and then there is making an offer those are 2 different things. Those inquiries were also made last year before they extended Nichushkin, traded for and extended Lehkonen, and won a cup. The Kane to COL boat sailed last year, and it isn’t coming back.

All of the Kane to Colorado Rumors heated up after everything you just stated happened. I also may have mis-represented my self, I do not think the Avs are likely to trade for him. However to say that there is no interest at all or that he would not help their team is INSANE. If Sakic could add Kane at ~2.7 for a first a mid tier prospect and a depth pick he would be doing back flips in his office.

you havent absorbed one thing I have said, good grief

Did you full ignore the fact that that Brian Burke said this himself, you know an actual GM in the league that this happens. Of course you did, doesnt fit your view point

Another Gm said he wasn't shopping Subban and traded him weeks later. GMs don't always tell the truth.

Again, you are 100% not following the point. Burke said this after he was a GM when he was a host on TV, why on earth would he lie about that. Use common sense

An active GM, a bad one at that in Bergevin, saying one thing to the media about his own player is 100% different that an ex-GM explaining what happens as part of their Day to Day job as part of an interview.
Good Grief

That’s completely untrue. Nobody is reporting any interest, I think you may be confusing bloggers posting than actual interest. Sure Kane would help but the Avs aren’t going to give up their 23 1st because if they did they would be passing on basically 3 consecutive drafts, there is zero chance of re-signing him. Yeah he’s a great player, yeah he would help any team, but again inquiring about the price you’re willing to pay which you know is low ball that’s all it is. Due diligence. I mean COL would love to add McDavid, Matthews, Heiskanen, Kaprisov, of course they are going to ask the price and check in on it, it doesn’t mean they are actually going to do it.

I think Flames should take that

That's about what Valimaki's currently worth = late 2nd/early 3rd, although not sure how early that 3rd will be in 2024 if OTT improves their defense and get good goaltending from Talbot and/or Forsberg
