Description
We are a month away from the start of the season. Idk if Dallas has enough cap space to sign Robertson. I don't even think they want to give Robertson that huge contract.

Dallas needs to dump Faska & pay Rob what he wants. And why not just buyout Khudobin at this point?? Does it save more cap space just to keep him burried??

Dallas's first mistake was prioritizing every player other than their superstar, first. Should have never signed Marchment until you had Robertson signed. Having Roberston/Oettinger signed then dictates what they would be able to do in free agency.

Nill went about his offseason completely backwards and its going to bite him in the rear end. Almost no teams are taking on cap right now without a significant sweetener so have fun sending Faksa/Khudobin to Arizona or Chicago with a pick and a prospect for future considerations. Even a player like Gurianov who has a little value will get very little at this point in the season. Nill waited too long and every GM around the league knows he is pushed into a corner and will have to make bad trade to fix the problem.

Every comparable Robertson has in the 7.5-8.5M range all have worse statistics. He has every right to get 8M MINIMUM.

People need to relax about Robertson. Deadline's make deals. Dallas has the cap space to sign him, it's just whether or not he's getting a bridge deal or a full 8-year extension. Dallas can pay him up to $8.2M per year without having to make an external move. Sending down both Tanner Kero and Anton Khudobin free up nearly $2M in additional cap space & leave Dallas with a 22-man roster (after Robertson is re-signed). If either gets claimed, oh well not a loss for Dallas. Heck, Dallas could also send down someone like Frederik Olofsson, who is waiver-exempt, to clear up an additional $750K if they needed to.

From a business perspective, Dallas is under no pressure to sign Robertson immediately. He either signs in Dallas or doesn't play. Does the on-ice performance take a hit? Obviously, but with no arbitration rights & 4 years until UFA eligibility, Robertson doesn't hold a ton of leverage over the Stars right now.

Zero doubt at all that a deal will get done.

I'm not necessarily going to disagree, but I will offer a counter-point to this statement. Would it not make sense to focus first on pieces that hold leverage in a negotiation? If the Stars wait on Marchment so that they can get Robertson signed, Marchment is under no obligation to wait for the Stars & certainly signs elsewhere (almost signed with the Canes as it is). By the Stars focusing on a UFA like Marchment in ensured that they were able to land him in free agency, while the team also had the knowledge that Robertson had no leverage to go anywhere else anyway.

I mean yeah, I get that but what's more important here? Making the future of the franchise happy or landing a 3rd liner in free agency?

Every amateur GM on this site knew one of Faksa, Khudobin or Gurianov would have to be moved/bought out this offseason to make space for Robertson/Oettinger and also make a splash in free agency with someone like Marchment as they did.

There are only two options here IMO, either Robertson signs a low now/big later bridge deal for like exactly what Dallas has in cap remaining but then asks for the moon in a few years OR they pay someone to take a player off their roster.

Your counter point is only valid, if it works. There is still time to find out here so its not set in stone but its cutting it close. If they squeeze him to accept a 6x6 year deal and it all works out, bravo! If they don't and Robertson demands exactly what Kyrou got, it was a terrible strategy to leave Robertson unsigned this long. Nill is running out of time and judging by the current NHL trade market, making a trade will prove difficult and costly for Dallas.
