For what its worth, the reason I traded Kerf in the first place is his cap is ~about the same~ as Foligno's and he expires after this year. Meaning that, in addition to the assets you acquire for Foligno, you also get a guy to fill a middle/top 6 forward slot for a year and 3.5 Mill in space going forward after this year. Ik you'd have to then find someone to replace those minutes for equivalent or less money after this year but it seems like a helpful move for Minny's cap nonetheless.
Yeah I think your framework is pretty good here. Like it's basically dollar-in-dollar-out for two cap tight teams, with futures to balance. And from just a raw value perspective, I don't think there's anything upsetting. I think an argument could be made that this is already an overpay for Foligno...at least on paper. It's all the intangibles that make it murky.
For the sake of discussion, if it was a '23 1st, Kerfoot and Knies, I'm snap accepting if I'm Wild GM. I'm not sure how other fans feel or what Guerin would think, but that's me. Assuming that's too much for Leafs, we could try and walk it backwards into something like 4th + Foligno, in exchange for '24 1st, Knies and Kerfoot....idk? Still probably too much for Leafs to stomach.
If we walk it back even more to like a 3rd + Foligno for Knies, Kerfoot and 24 1st, it's close for me. I'm not sure if I'd accept. My gut says yes, but I'd probably want to hear other opinions or do some more research. Edit - and it still may be too rich for Leafs, regardless.
