Heiskanen doesn’t belong in the top 3 and if you’re making that kind of argument (most likely complete two-way game), McAvoy is just a better version of him
I'll die on this hill. Josi is such a trash can defensively, the fact he is probably the most dominant offensive defenseman of his era makes him a very good defenseman, but he shouldn't be near the top 10 conversation. He's SUCH a trash can defensively

He really was last year, but that was kind of a first.

I'm not seeing someone who's terrible defensively. I think some of the defensive lapses can be attributed to him being the most dynamic player on his team with the responsibility to make things happen for his team. If he played on Colorado where he had more support and didn't have to do things himself he'd look better defensively. Even then I don't think his defense on Nashville is terrible.

His underlying numbers defensively are tragic. Screw how he looks, the numbers say he is SH*T defensively. He's not good in his own end. Like not at all. He's not. He's elite offensively, but he's never been good defensively.

Trusting numbers over the eye test is something I fundamentally disagree with. When I watch Josi play on Nashville, I see him singlehandedly driving the entire bus for Nashville.

You say that like that D core doesn't have Alexandre Carrier, Mattias Ekholm and Dante Fabbro on it. Trusting the eyes, which are proven to agree with whatever you think you are seeing, is a very dangerous task. Look at the numbers. He's among the WORST in the league in all defensive stats. He is awful in his own end.

Carrier, Ekholm, etc are all very reliable guys, but they don't have the responsibility of driving the entire team's offense singlehandedly from the back end. I'm not saying Josi doesn't make mistakes or give up chances defensively, but that comes with the special things he can do that very, very few players can do.

Offensively, Josi does things no other player can do. But that isn't the job of a DEFENSEman. He is one of the worst players in his own end in the NHL from a numerical standpoint. I'm not kidding. He's defensively worse than anyone on the Canucks D core to bring this closer to home for you.

He's also better than anyone the Canucks defense core too, by and currently by lot (I think Hughes could close that gap this year). He probably should've won the Norris over Makar this year given that it was just for the regular season. This is like when people soured on Erik Karlsson before his Conference Finals run in 2017.

No, no he shouldn't have. He scored 100 points as a defenseman and was a net negative on the ice statistically. He's that garbage defensively. He's the best offensive defensemen we've seen since Orr. But he is not a good defenseman. Saying he should have won the Norris this year is ludocrist.
Karlsson was completely different. His analytics never faded. His product did. Don't be fooled by end product. That's an important part of the game, but it is still less than 10% of the game.
