No. You’ve been here long enough, you should know 1 way deal or 2 way deals doesn’t affect waivers. He is waivers exempt for 2022-23, after that he will fight with Montembeault to be Allen’s back up in 2023-24. Whoever win the back up spot stays in the NHL, the other (probably Montembeault gets waived in Laval)

3 year deal for a goalie who is not nhl level. 890k is a steal though, well done kent hughes

Basically what I would have predicted. Surprised 1st year is still a 1-way, figured they'd save a bit of money but not a big deal, still waiver exempt this season.

Weekes tweeted that Montreal is working on an extension with Allen so next year's duo should be set. Great deal for Montreal, thought he would've wanted over a million for that term.

i think montembeault would get claimed before reaching laval... unless he's terrible this year and more expensive next year, he would be an upgrade at backup for chicago or arizona or even winnipeg... but its possible habs just let him walk as rfa next summer rather than extending him if primeau looks ready

I think he clears. Chicago and Arizona do not want to get "better" as it hurts their tanking efforts.

There are going to be half a dozen 3rd goalies waived to the AHL at the end of camp. If a team has an injury or like Winnipeg wants to upgrade their backup then you might see small ripples but generally no NHL team can offer a roster spot to those guys so they clear

I was aware about the 1 way/2 way contracts. I just figured his waiver eligibility was up.

Should honestly have him backup the following season and just trade Allen at the TDL

As the concern I got is Allen's gonna get a 3 year deal and push Primeau out into waiver claim territory in the coming years

I think Price returns 2023-2024 and if Allen is still around Primeau got no spot

As yes if Price cant come back then bringing Allen back is fine but if he feels hes ready to come back thats when there will be issues

Our future will be Allen-Primeau. We could always trade Allen anyways. Don't see Montembeault having a future here.

A one way deal still means he is going to make close to a millions dollar to play in the AHL next season. That's far from cheap.

Anyway injuries will happen and he will be called up...

The amount of term is surprising

As much as this is a minor deal, this is the sort of thing that Bergevin rarely ever did. By paying an AHL goalie real money on a one way deal, you can create a situation where you can send them up and down while still making them feel they are part of a plan, give them some security and runway to develop, and if it works out that he's even a competent backup in year 2 or 3, you have a decent chunk of cap space. Worst case scenario a rich team invested some real money in a young player with no impact to their cap situation what so ever.

These deals fizzle out to essentially nothing more often then they turn into wins, but the risk is essentially 0, so you find a good number of these types of things over the next few years and the couple that do work out are still huge value.

Wasn't a 1 way deal, but that doesn't matter. Either we trade Montembeault or Allen (not likely considering there's rumours about him resigning). Then we play Primeau as a backup Goalie.

At worst, it is injury insurance on a contract that is 100% buriable. That's a win.
