IMHO, I don’t think the Devils would do this deal. They get a borderline First Liner in Nylander who also happens to be on a good deal, but they have to give up Mercer who just had a solid Rookie season and projects in their Yop 6 next year, AND Severson, a very valuable asset at this trade deadline and also a excellent top 4 RHD. I don’t think Joey Anderson and Justin Holl make up for the difference in value

That's beside the point though, they wouldn't trade Mercer alone for that package, let alone adding Severson.

If (part of) the price of obtaining Patty Kane is Nylander, than what is the point? Not sure if / how but Kane only makes sense for the Leafs if he can play with either Matthews /Marner or JT / Nylander ….

Holtz instead of Mercer? Idk, man... I may not be specifically a NJD fan, but Holtz seems like he should be more important to keep around than Mercer. Mercer is kind of redundant for NJ at this point and is going to be more expensive a lot sooner than Holtz will. So keeping Holtz kicks the can down the road a bit cap-wise, and he arguably has more offensive upside than Mercer.

Either way, that is a trade NJ probably walks away from.

The chances of Bernier getting activated are a fair bit higher than 0%.
If Bernier is activated the Devils will be over the cap as is, adding an extra 2m to that would further exacerbate the issue.
This becomes a moot point if it is revealed that Bernier is done playing pro hockey altogether.
