Description
Both players want out. NYR gets a 1st + a young, skilled NHL ready middle 6 C/W + a young, smooth skating NHL ready dman that can be a 2nd pair possibly.

NYR aren't dealing from a position of strength and this is a pretty good return considering.

i think rags probably accept but pilon is an AHLer not a middle 6 player, he'll be lucky to crack the 4th line, the johansen 2nd pair potential sailed about 4 years ago nothing more then a potential 6/7 dman

Pilon is a middle 6 NHL player, Caps just don't have the room for him. Plays center wing, great playmaker, wicked shot. Probably a good 3rd liner. Johansen is probably a bottom NHL guy but has a chance to be a #4 if he stays healthy. We'll see.

i think you are overrating pilon big time.
1. Mantha/Oshie/Backstrom all missed a significant amount of time this season
2. he can't be that amazing because Hagelin, Sprong who might i add is still a FA, Snively, Protas, Fjallby, Leason, malenstyn all got play time over him even mcmichael who didn't live up to the hype could have been sent down for another year of AHL development
3. with all the opportunites available if he was that good he would have been given them

and no johansen will not be a top 4 dman ever lol he hasn't been that effective of a player since his last year in Kelowna.

maybe johansen is a top 4 dman on chicago and pilon a top 9 forward on arizona but currently they are just depth guys still and given they are 24 now their hope of breaking out is slowly dwindling

Pilon is an ahler and Johansen might end up being a 3rd pairing guy, but they aren't that important in this IMO.

The reality is that any team that is willing to move their first round pick, as I'm sure the caps are, will only do that for immediate upgrades and help. Lundkvist and Kravstov are not that. I honestly don't think Kravstov beats out any winger currently on the caps' roster and is probably in a battle for the 13th forward spot at camp with Borgstrom, Snively, and Leason. Lundkvist would probably be an upgrade over Gustafsson this year, but giving up a first in the best draft in 10 years to give a guy who has played 25 NHL games averaging 13 mins a night is not smart asset management.

Unless they can get them for pennies on the dollar which is unlikely as a divisional rival, Lundkvist and Kravstov make no sense at all for the caps. Why spend a first on two lottery tickets that probably wouldn't even get the playing time here they are looking for when you could get Miller or Severson or Sanheim instead?

There were just too many dudes in front of Pilon. Lav loves his defense first guys so Pilon never got a chance and when he did he scored.

Johansen had a great rookie AHL season, keeping his top 4 progress on track but then those 3 years of injuries were brutal. Had a great resurgence season last year. Could still see a #4 there with his speed and brains, but should at least be a good #5, but he needs to stay healthy to do that.

Caps need youth and skill and they bring both. It's a little bit of a gamble but they both looked promising. It wouldn't be for this season as much as for next season when a ton of holes open up.

Between lappiere, mcmike, strome, fehervary they've got plenty of youth and skill they just don't have enough minutes to give. Even if you wanted to spend a first for young guys, there are better proven options out there. Go get Sandin, or Durzi, or Vilardi, or Nick Hague, or someone who has actually proven they are NHL quality players. At this point in their careers neither Lundkvist nor Kravstov have not proven themselves as that.

I'm fine with taking flyers on young guys that could use fresh starts (connolly, sprong, strome) but the key to all of those moves is that they cost the caps almost nothing to acquire and not a first round pick. Just look at what happened to Lias Andersson -- another promising high pick from the rangers -- after the kings gave up a second rounder for him.
